Brief History of Indie Rock

A brief history of Indie Rock:
It is a genre of alternative Rock, which
originally originated in America and
the UK in the 1980's.
Indie Rock is very diverse and had
many other sub genres associated with
it. In the mid 1980's the term indie was
used to describe music produced by
those of punk labels.

 In the 1990's the term 'Indie Rock became

associated with genres that remained in an
independent status. By the end of the
1990s indie rock developed subgenres and
related styles including lo-fi , noise ,pop ,
emo , slowcore , post-rock and math rock.
In the 2000's a new type of bands had
emerged allowing Indie Rock to enter
mainstream charts. Four bands allowed this
breakthrough to happen they were:
The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and
The Vines.

 The characteristics of an Indie Rock

band/artist were based on a low
budget, do it yourself kind of attitude
and this was how the artists then
evolved.

Clothing I would associate with Indie

Rock.

It is unique
to its
genre,
there are
no
limitations
to what
you can
wear. It is
tailored to
your
individual
interests.

Studs/jewell
ery is
unique to
the person
and is
styled by
them.

Clothing I would associate(mens version)

Men's style for Indie Rock is flannel shirts, black jeans and
Doc martens style shoes/boots.

Accessories

Chokers are a main

item wore by indie
rock lovers. They
are edgy but subtle
to fit in with any
outfit.

Shoes

The shoes are casual and easy wearing. They are

suitable for any types of locations, especially
concerts.

The makeup I
would associate
with Indie Rock,
isn't extreme, it is
more individual
to the person.
They use
different colour
lipsticks and
eyeshadows and
would most likely
wear eyeliner.

Locations

The backgrounds should be simple but not plain, allowing the model
to be the dominant area in the image.

Charts
Indie Rock is not always
common in the charts as it is a
niche genre.
It is common for more pop/rap
to be in the charts due to more
people's interests and it being
more popular. However older
songs such as the Killers, Mr
Brightside is popular in the
charts many years later after it
was released. Other bands
such as arctic monkeys are
also commonly in the charts.
