Purpose is to treat diseases with either

Inflammatory Component or
Immunologic Component
Purposes:
Decrease edema
Decrease irritation
Decreases mucus secretion
Decrease lymphyocytes/lymphoid tissue

Types of Corticosteriods Meds

Inhalers-Beclomethasone: Beclovent
PO- Predsione
IV-Methylpredisolone: Solumedrol

Side Effects of Corticosteroids

Decreased resistance to infection

Masks signs & symptoms of infection
Hyperglycemia
Mood changes
Skin changes
Cushings Syndrome

Dosing of Corticosteroids
Lowest Dose to minimize side effects
During periods of stress dosage may need
to be increased or even doubled
Teach patients never to stop taking drug
suddenly-must taper off to prevent an
adrenal crisis!
Should wear medic alert bracelet if on long
term use of corticosteroids.
