INTRODUCTION
Examined the feasibility of constructing a locker room for the gymnastics team of

Hamline University
Researched the components of a locker room
Determined the positive benefits of locker rooms
Determined the negative outcomes of not having a team locker room
Identified if the construction of a locker room is necessary, wanted, and feasible

CRITERIA FOR A LOCKER ROOM

How often would a locker occupied by the Hamline University gymnastics team be

occupied?
Is there space in Walker Field House to construct a locker room?
Would the locker room reap benefits for the teams success?
Is there an interest and support for the construction of a locker room?

METHODS
Researched benefits of locker rooms
Researched components of a gymnastics locker room to get a better idea of

whether there were specific components of a locker room that were better suited
for a gymnastics team rather than a general locker room
Researched benefits of video analysis sports
Researched backpacks weight college to identify the problem of heavy backpacks

and the effect on students

Distributed 32 questionnaires to students in Krista Sorias ENGL 1800 class

SECONDARY LIBRARY RESEARCH

Contemporary team locker rooms contain a shower and toilet zone, a dry locker

area, a team meeting space and often a team lounge

Video analysis of skills can aid the gymnasts and coaches immensely
In a study done, there was a mean increase from the baseline across the girls

skills of 53%
It is common for student athletes to come to practice straight from their classes,

therefor they will be carrying their backpacks with them.

One study found that when wearing a backpack, discomfort of the student

significantly increased due to the backpacks weight.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

Administered 32

questionnaires to
students in Krista Sorias
ENGL 1800 class
Consisted of 10 questions

in regards to locker
rooms, its components,
and the opinions of those
taking the questionnaire

PRIMARY RESEARCH: WHAT IS THE AVERAGE NUMBER OF

BOOKS CARRIED IN YOUR BACKPACK AT A TIME?

Figure 1. Average number of textbooks/notebooks per day for Hamline University college students

PRIMARY RESEARCH: HOW DO YOU LEARN BEST? VISUALLY,

AUDITORY, OR OTHER

Figure 2. Methods of learning in students

PRIMARY RESEARCH: SHOULD HAMLINE UNIVERSITY

PROVIDE A LOCKER ROOM FOR THE GYMNASTICS TEAM?

gure 3. Opinions in support or against the construction of locker room for the Hamline University gymnastic

CONCLUSIONS
The sport is advancing, so should the resources

available to the athletes

Would allow for student athletes to increase
success mentally and physically
if the gymnastics team is in the current facility,

the locker room would be utilized

Construction of a locker room could raise the
level of skills, monetary gifts, and
attractiveness for potential students and
donors

RECOMMENDATIONS
More research specifically on detailed cost
Research on the most efficient space for the locker room to be placed/constructed
Research the time necessary to construct a locker
As long as Hamline University has a gymnastics team, a locker room should be

constructed
