Unitary Government Is a form of Government in which all of the powers of the government are held by a single unit or agency. The powers are not distributed between the centre and the states under the constitution, but they are concentrated in the centre only. Local units of government have power given to them by the central government. Countries such as France, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, along with other democratic nations use the unitary system of government, however, the same rules. Merits of Unitary Government: 1.Strong Government: All the powers of the government are in the hands of the centre under the constitution and states are given the powers upon the will of the centre. Therefore a powerful government is formed at the centre. 2.Single Ci There is single citizenship in unitary state and every citizen is the citizen of the entire country and no separate citizenship of the state. 3.Flexi without any difficulty according to the demand of particular y: The constitution is not so rigid and is amended situation and public opinion. 4.Effective administration: In unitary government there is effective administration because there is no conflict between the state and the centre and the state are to abide by the orders of the centre. 5.Economical: In unitary government there is only one parliament and cabinet for the entire country which makes the government less expensive. 6.Prompt decisions: In unitary government prompt decisions are taken because the entire power is in the hands of centre. This government is best suited for crisis De-Merits of Unitary Government: 1.Way for Despotism: Due to centralization of powers there is constant fear of central government becoming despotic. 2.Central government becomes overburdened with work: The centre has to perform many such tasks as are performed by the state and local governments. The local administration is run by the government official and not by the representatives of people.
