Reoccurring episodes
of high called mania
or manic & lows which
is depression.
Manic phase: extreme
euphoria, insomnia,
talkative, & risk-taking
behavior.
Depression phase:
extremely sad,
hopeless, lethargic, &
suicidal thought

Major Depressive Disorder


A persistent
depressed mood or
loss of interest in
activities, causing
significant
impairment in daily
life.
Believed to be
caused by a
chemical imbalance
in the brain.

Involves a
combination of
symptoms such as
depressed mood
(sadness), poor
concentration,
insomnia, fatigue,
appetite disturbances,
excessive guilt or
hopelessness and
thoughts of suicide.

Treatments

Self-Medicated: individuals that use addictive or


habituating drugs to relieve their symptoms.
They are categorized as having a dual diagnosis
Medication used for psychosis (symptoms)
Psychotherapy/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is
used so individuals can learn how to live with
their illness and learn coping techniques.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) a procedure,
done under general anesthesia, in which small
electric currents are passed through the brain,
intentionally triggering a brief seizure. Reverse
symptoms of certain mental illnesses like
depression
