Norman Rockwell
Rockwell's illustrations for the
cover of The Saturday Evening
Post is what he is most
famous for. Norman
Rockwell's most famous
pieces are Rosie the Riveter,
Willie Gillis, saying grace, and
the four freedoms.

Without thinking too much about it in specific terms, I was showing the America
I knew and observed to others who might not have noticed.
Norman Rockwell

Describe
The art piece has Santa Clause
sitting, with eyes closed. He is
wearing a grey apron. There are
also Elves on his shoulder, lap,
and near the floor. He is holding a
red bag, with elves crawling
around the bag and taking things.
There is a toy house on his lap
that has a sticker that says RUSH,
also there is a paint bucket that
an elf is using to paint the toy
house.

Analyze

There is texture in the Apron,

they are folds and wrinkles.
There is a fold near the legs
where it makes the viewers eyes
move towards the toy house.
There is a repetition of graycloth
which gives of a gloomy mood.
Also there is repetitionof red in
the elves hats, the bag and the
paint, which has a
joyfulmood. There is also a lot of
eye movement from Santa'sapron
to the toy house, Santa's apron to
the doll and thedoll towards the
bag which leads you towards
Santa's arm witchcreates circular
eye motion,

interpret
The piece has many dull colors which
gives off a gloomy mood. Although it
also has red color throughout the
piece.I think the artwork is about how
Christmas is becoming more about
giving toys without actually
celebrating Christmasinstead of being
with family and how the Christmas
spirit is fading away. The dull cream,
grey, and white colors I think
represent the fading away of the
Christmas spirit, while the red color is
the remaining Christmas spirit. Also
the sticker that says rush represents
the lack of passion for creating toys.

evaluate

This art piece is successful

because of the contrast of the
red color and the dull colors
which grabs the viewers
attention. The artpiece has a
gloomy feel to it which I think
makes the viewers question why
it feels like it does even though
its Christmas related.Rockwell
does a good job of casting the
mood of the piece. The piece
also feels unorganized which
creates a frantic atmosphere.
Overall I think its a well made
piece.
