SOCIALIZING:

(How the Internet is impacting our

relationships and social lives)

Were getting used to a new way of

being alone together. People want
to be with each other, but also
elsewhere -- connected to all the
different places they want to be
-- Sherry Turkle

HOW THE INTERNET HAS

AFFECTED OUR REAL LIFE
RELATIONSHIPS

The Effect of Technology on Relationships

Ability to substitute relationship in real

life for an online relationship
Willing to engage more in confrontation
because person is behind screen
Allows for disengaging from the
emotional side of conversations

The Effect of Porn on Relationships

Due to the rise in technology,

teenage boys consume porn
online at an increasing rate
Over 40% of boys- ages 10-17
are exposed to porn
Negatively affects women in
relationships

ONLINE FRIENDSHIPS AND

RELATIONSHIPS

Social media has allowed people to

connect one another both platonically
and romantically
Social Media apps like Instagram and
Twitter have allowed people to
connect all over the world.
Communicating over the internet
makes people more brave and more
likely to say or do things they wouldnt
do in person.

CATFISHING
(DO YOU KNOW WHO YOURE REALLY TALKING TO?)

CATFISHING
Catfishes are able to modify their
profiles in order to be more appealing to
other people
People alter themselves to
maximize their attractiveness
Because catfishes appear like other
users, people tend to accept their
information without verifying it

Catfish is a show on MTV where Nev Schulman helps

people meet the people theyve been talking to on the
internet. Unfortunately, sometimes the person on the
profile doesnt match up with the person in real life.

INTERNET HARASSMENT
(THE NEGATIVE SIDE OF THE INTERNET)

CYBERBULLYING

CYBERBULLYING
Girls are more prone to cyber-bullying
than boys are
Unlike bullying in person, cyberbullying
is bullying that cant be escaped
70% of 18 to 24 year olds have said
that they have been harassed online

TROLLING
Online disinhibition -- because people are
anonymous on the Internet, people are
more prone to saying horrible things
Trolling is when people post off-topic,
occasionally inflammatory comments on
posts

This is an example of harmless trolling -- the user

posted an unrelated comment but it wasnt meant to
hurt anyone

DOXXING
Doxxing is when
personal
information about
an anonymous
user is posted
Doxxing is illegal
but some people
have differing
opinions about
doxing
There is talk about
making doxxing a
federal crime

Leslie Jones was a victim of

doxxing over the summer -- her
drivers license, passport, and
nude photos were posted online

CONCLUSIONS
While the Internet has brought us closer
together, it has changed the dynamics
of our relationships
Were able to create new
relationships but it has the potential
to be dangerous
The Internet allows us to connect with
people outside our community
The Internet can also be used to affect
people negatively because were able to
connect with others on a global scale

Thanks!
