WRITING PROCESS
Phase 1: Pre-writing
Prewriting is the first stage
of the writing process and
the point at which we
discover and explore our
initial
ideas
about
a
subject.

Step 1: Choose a topic

For this course, the choice of topic
will depend on your major.
Think ahead. For example, what
topic would you like to research for
your dissertation thesis writing?

Step 2: Gather ideas

You may use different techniques:

Jot down all the ideas you have about

the topic without a specific order.
Do not worry about accuracy.
Write everything that comes into your
head.

Jot down sub-topics and list ideas for each

one without a specific order. Example:

Clustering
Either: You may brainstorm ideas using a
graphic organiser:
They are a
waste of money.

It is a kind of
entertainment
Should
lotteries be
banned?

Create
addiction

You win
money easily.

OR: You may make a chart clustering pros

& cons / similarities & differences, etc:
PROS
It is a kind of
entertainment
You get money
easily
It is not expensive

CONS
They are not really
a good chance to
make money
They are a waste of
money.
They give the
wrong message
about solving
poverty
Create addiction

Step 3: Narrowing ideas

1. Decide which side / position you
will take
2. Organise ideas for this stand
3. Outline your paragraph.

1. Decide which side you will take - do you

agree or disagree with it? This will be your
opinion.
You may use the following phrases:
I think / believe that S+V
I agree / disagree that S + V
I agree / disagree with .. for . Reasons.
I am for / against the idea that .S + V
There are . reasons why S + V
For example:
I am for the idea that downloading music from the
internet should be illegal.

2. Organise your ideas:

Restatement

I strongly agree that lotteries should be banned.

Lotteries are a waste of money.
Less money to buy things we need.
Lotteries are addictive.
If you dont win, you want more tickets
Lotteries are not really a good chance to make money.

Winning the lottery depends only on luck.

Buying the lottery should definitely be prohibited for the
reasons stated above.

WRITING PROCESS
Phase 2: Drafting
You start writing your
paragraph by organising
your ideas.

Step 4. Write your first paragraph / draft:

Lotteries should be banned
I strongly agree that lotteries should be banned. I will support my
point if view with the following three reasons. The first reason is
that I consider that lotteries are a waste of money. Every time we
buy the lottery, we have less money to buy things we need such
as medicines or food. Another reason is that playing the lottery is
addictive. When we buy a lottery ticket and we do not win, we may
buy more and more tickets. Finally, I consider that playing the
lottery is not a really good chance to make money. I say this
because we cannot use our abilities or skills to win the lottery.
Winning the lottery depends only on luck. Restating my position,
buying the lottery should definitely be prohibited for the reasons
mentioned above.

process. When you edit, you make two

1. You fix errors in grammar, mechanics,
punctuation, spelling and formatting.
2. You improve the way you express your ideas.
You may change words, sentence organization
or punctuation to make your writing more
vibrant and exciting, clearer, more specific or
more direct.
