Teaching Strategies
This book can be read in song form. For
a fun classroom activity, I would have
the students sing the song and act out
the movements.

TEACHING STRATEGIES
This book is great with a unit on insects.
I would have younger students draw a
beetle based on the description made in
the book. I would also keep this book in
my library in order for students who are
motivated to read by this content.

Brief Summary: This book is about Rosa Parks
and her life both before and after she refused
to give up her seat on the bus.
TEACHING STRATEGIES
I would students write a letter to the author
explaining what they liked about the story or
any connections they made. Rosa was a
pivotal person in the Civil Rights movement
so this is a great text to read when we are
learning about civil rights.

TEACHING STRATEGIES
THIS IS A PRETTY DENSE BOOK FOR READERS. IN ORDER FOR
TEACHING STRATEGIES
I WOULD HAVE STUDENTS READ THIS AFTER WE HAD
DID A UNIT ON WHAT HAPPENED DURING THIS TIME.
THIS IS ALSO A VERY SENSITIVE AND ABSTRACT
TOPIC. A STRATEGY IS TO HAVE PARENTS AWARE OF
THE BOOK WE ARE READING AND TO HAVE THEM
PREFACE TO THEIR KIDS THAT THIS IS A
STRUGGLING TIME IN OUR HISTORY. THERE IS ALSO
A MOVIE THAT GOES ALONG WITH IT THAT WOULD
BE POWERFUL TO WATCH.
TEACHING STRATEGIES
I WOULD HAVE STUDENTS DRAW AND IMAGE OF WHAT THEY THINK THE WORLD LOOKED LIKE AT THIS
TIME. THIS WAS DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND A LOT OF PEOPLE WERE STRUGGLING TO MAKE
ENDS MEET. AFTER READING (OR DURING) I WOULD HAVE STUDENTS DRAW THEIR IDEAS OF THE IMAGES
IN THEIR HEADS.
Teaching Strategies
For this story, I would have
students get into groups and
discuss what the book meant to
them. This book goes against
what society is teaching little
minds about who boys and girls
should be. Once the groups have
discussed, I would have a large
group discussion.
10,000 Dresses
Title: 10,000 Dresses
Author: Marcus Ewert
Publisher: Triangle Square
Date Published: 2008
ISBN Number:: 1583228500
Age Range: age 5-9
Brief Summary: This is a book is about a boy who
wear dresses even when his family doesnt think
boys should.
Teaching Strategies
Before reading, I would have
students make a list of girl
things and boy things. After
reading this story, we would
modify our list knowing that
gender and sexuality can be
different to all individuals.
Teaching Strategies
To drive home the point that students
come with all different ideas,
interests, and gender identifies, I
would read this book and have
students think pair share about what
are some things that people say only
girls can do but boys would like to do?
And vice versa.

FAIRY TALES
KATIE AMONSON
TEACHING
STRATEGIES
This book is a compilation
of fairy tales. In a
classroom, I would read a
short story each day and
pair it with a writing
activity. The writing
activity for these stories is
to identify the characters,
problem, solution, magic,
and purpose.
TEACHING
STRATEGIES
In an older classroom, I would
have the students write up an
alternative ending. Fairy tales
are fun and lively stories and
this one is very interesting. By
having students come up either
with an alternative ending or an
alternative beginning, I am
giving students exposure to
writing their own fairy tales.
TEACHING STRATEGIES
There are numerous versions of three little pigs.
In the classroom, I would have students compare
and contrast versions and choose their favorite.
DOMESTICITY AND
ADVENTURE
KATIE AMONSON
TEACHING STRATEGIES
THIS BOOK CAN BE AN ABSTRACT
BOOK BECAUSE IT IS POSTAPOCALYPTIC. TO INTRODUCE THE
STORY, A PARENT MIGHT NEED TO
DISCUSS WHAT THE WORLD WOULD
LOOK LIKE AT THIS TIME. I THINK
HAVING A DISCUSSION WILL HELP
STUDENTS GET IN THE MINDSET TO
BE ABLE TO FOLLOW THIS
ADVENTURE STORY
TEACHING STRATEGIES
ANY QUESTIONS?
TEACHING
STRATEGIES
THIS STORY IS GREAT FOR A
WRITING ACTIVITY BECAUSE IT IS
THE ADVENTURES OF A WRITER.
TO MAKE THIS A MULTIMODAL
LESSON, I WOULD HAVE
STUDENTS CREATE THEIR OWN
CONNECTIONS TO THE STORY.
THEY COULD ACT OUT A PART,
HAVE A JOURNAL ENTRY, MAKE
SOMETHING OUT OF CLAY, ETC.
THEN ONCE ALL STUDENTS
HAVE MADE SOMETHING, WE
WOULD HAVE A GALLERY WALK
TO SHARE OUR IDEAS.
