The Cane Mutiny

January 18, 2017

Context
Demographics
Average age of German population steadily rising -> Aging population
In 25 years, more than a quarter of the countrys population would be
over age 65
Without Immigration, the countrys population expected to fall from
82 million to 24 million

Context
Company
Part-Time statute for the elderly was not offered anymore
Younger employees are not the best to market products required by
70-year-olds.
Frank Heberers proposal for creating a Day care center to enable
better recruitment and retention was rejected
Companys main aim was cost containment

Recommendations
Frank Heberer should include the following points in his report to make
it more convincing:

Costs associated with an older person getting sick sick leaves, work delays, hurting
productivity, and
losing clients

Salary Structure Older people with more experience draw more salary than the younger
ones

When managers are younger than their reports, tensions often arise

Requirement of continuing education for older employees to adapt to new trends and
technology

Recommendations
Information campaign to spread
demographics and its consequences

awareness

about

changing

Plan for internal development and continuing education

Offering Part-time work program on a case to case basis
Transferring aging workers to less demanding roles
Sharing a day care center with other companies in the region to lower
costs but increase retention and get better recruits

Impact in Indian context of this Mutiny

India has a younger population with only 7.5% people above the age of
60
Younger generation much more tech savvy
No part-time programs for older employees
No emphasis on continuing education for older employees
Age and experience still a requirement for an employee to grow up the
ladder in an organization
