PERIODIC ANALOG SIGNALS
DATA AND SIGNALS
Data can be ANALOG or DIGITAL in nature

ANALOG DATA this refers to information that is

continuous

DIGITAL DATA this refers to information that has

discrete states and takes on discrete values.
DATA AND SIGNALS
Signals can be ANALOG or DIGITAL in nature too

ANALOG SIGNALS can have an infinite number of

values in a range

DIGITAL SIGNAL can only have a limited number of

values
ANALOG SIGNALS
An analog signal has infinitely many levels of intensity
over a period of time
A simple analog signal is a SINE WAVE that cannot be
further decomposed into a simpler signal.
AMPLITUDE
The amplitude of a signal is the
absolute value of its intensity at time t

The peak amplitude of a signal is the

absolute value of the highest intensity

The amplitude of a signal is proportional

to the energy carried by the signal
FREQUENCY
Frequency this refers to the
number of cycles completed by
the wave in one second.

Period this refers to the time

take by the wave to complete
one second

Frequency is also the rate of

change with respect to time
Short span of time HIGH

FREQUENCY AND PERIOD

Units of period and frequency

PHASE
Phase describes the position
of the waveform relative to
time 0.

Phase is measured in
degrees or radian.
PERIODIC AND NON-
PERIODIC SIGNALS
PERIODIC SIGNAL
Signal with repeat itself after a fixed time period.

NON-PERIODIC SIGNAL
Signal which do not repeat itself after a fixed time
period.
PERIODIC AND NON-
PERIODIC SIGNALS
Periodic Signal
- a signal which repeats itself after specific interval of time
- a signal that repeats its pattern over a period
- they can be represented by a mathematical equation
- their values can be determined at any point of time
- they are deterministic signals
- example: sine cosine square sawtooth, etc

Non-Periodic Signal
- a signal which does not repeat itself after a specific interval of time
PERIODIC ANALOG SIGNALS
SIMPLE PERIODIC ANALOG SIGNAL
A sine wave that cannot be decomposed into simpler
signals.

COMPOSITE PERIODIC ANALOG SIGNAL

A signal that is composed of multiple sine waves.
