How the importance of water to the
plant cell?
1)Important part of the process of
metabolism
2)Needed in photosynthesis and
respiration
3)Excellent solvent properties
WATER HAS UNIQUE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL
PROPERTIES

Chemical Properties of
Water
Physical Properties of Water
Water has physical properties that are important for the life
of plants and all living organisms, these properties include:
Boiling Point
Thermal Capacity
A High Heat of Fusion and Heat of Vaporization
The Excellent Solvent
Cohesion and Adhesion
Low Viscosity
Function of Water
The main component of protoplasm
Be a solvent for the necessary plant nutrients
Hydraulic system
Stabilization and Heat Transfer
As Locomotor
Mecanisms of Water Movement
Movement of substances from one region to another is
commonly referred to as translocation. Mechanisms for
translocation may be classied as either active or
passive , depending on whether metabolic energy is
expended in the process
passive mechanisms can be divided into diffusion and
osmosis
Diffusion
Diffusion can be interpreted as a
directed movement from a region of
a High concentration to a region of
lower concentration
Osmosis
Osmosis is water diffusion
through a semipermeable
membrane
Osmosis

Water movement in
plant cells requires
solute gradients.
For example, soil
nitrate (NO3 ) is
actively transported
across the
selectively
permeable cell
membrane into
plant root cells
PLASMOLI
SIS

If the plant cells lose too much water

by osmosis they become less rigid
and eventually the cell membrane
shrinks away from the cell wall
called plasmolysis.

Water potential

The free energy per unit volume of water.

The potential value of water from pure water = 0 mpa (megapascals)

water potential is influenced by three compositions:

1. matric potential (m)

reduction of free energy due to the appeal of solid surface of the water
molecules.

2. osmotic potential (s) +

3. pressure potential (p) -
