Baroque Architecture

(17 18th century)

BAROQUE is adapted from Portuguese noun
BAROCCO meaning
a pearl of irregular shape.

EVOLUTION
-Council of Trent (1545-1553)Roman Catholic
(1563) declared art should be more
vernacular .

The baroque style in architecture emerged as

a revolt against the rigid conventions of
Italian Renaissance classicism.
Instead of the straight lines of classicism,
curved and broken lines appeared.
Decoration became more important and
elaborate, and spaces became more
complex, their impact highlighted by the
dramatic use of light and shade.

Elements of the Baroque architecture are
complicated decorations, paintings and
contrasts between light and shadow.
The final effect of this style is tension and
humility. Baroque looks different in different
countries.
In Italy, where it started, the style is reflected
in dramatic churches with irregular shapes,
huge domes and extravagant ornamentation.
In France is highly decorated combined with
classical features.
Sacred buildings and chateaux were typical
for this style. Some examples of Baroque

in London.
This style tried to show the wealth and power of the church.
To get light into the building they used several windows to bring in sunlight.
An example would be the Pantheon in Paris.

Influence.......................

The Baroque style, though enthusiastically developed in Spain, was to a

large extent, in Spain, an architecture of surfaces and faades, unlike in
France and Austria where we see the construction of numerous huge
palaces and monasteries. The Baroque arch had its influence almost in
entire Europe and did had its ripples surfacing in Asia in late medieval and
on the American continent in early medieval.
