GYM NO SPERMS
ACTIVITY
GYMNOSPERMS
are the plants that bear naked seeds.

Naked because the seeds are not produced within ovary;

instead, they are born on the surface of reproductive structures
called cones.

they do not have an outer covering or shell around their

seeds
they do not produce flowers
they do not have fruits
they are pollinated by the wind
Types of
Gymnosperms
Phylum Cycadophyta
Members of this phylum are commly
called cycads (palmlike trees)

Cycad is the only living genus with

about 200 species. The seeds are born
on spiny cones from specialized leaves
sporophylls.

One primitive attribute of cycads is the

presence of flagellated sperm to
fertilize the egg.
Phylum Ginkophyta
This phylum consists of a single
species, Gingko biloba, which
bear its naked seeds in green,
fruitlike structures.
The plant is a hard, conical tree
with fan-shaped deciduous leaves
that arise from spurs on the
branches.
Phylum Ginkophyta
Gingkgos grow under protected coditions that they are
domesticated plants and are planted as ornametal
tree.

Gingkos are like cycads as they also need the presence

of flagellated sperm to fertilized the egg.
Phylum Gnetophyta

Gnetophytes are semidesert

plants.
Whorled structure.
Phylum Coniferata
Conifers are gymnosperms
characterized by evergreen trees
that produce needlelike to scalelike
leaves that are heavily cutnized.

The name of the phylum is derived

from the cones that the plants
produce.

The trees can easily be identified

because of their conical shape. The
trees produce pollen and ovulate
cones.
What are the importance of
gymnosperms as part of the
community and food web?
