 Count / Non-Count nouns

General Nouns: father, mother, son, children, teacher,

friend, husband, wife, cat, fish, dog, flower, sky, city,
house, book, school, etc.

General Nouns must always be classified

or identified as singular or plural.

Examples of Non – Count Nouns

• ของเหลว coffee, water, rain, milk, juice

• ของเล็ก – เยอะ sand, rice, sugar, salt, dust
• ของที่มีหลายหน่วย money, furniture, glass, paper, meat,
food
• ของที่ไม่มีรูปร่ างแน่นอน freedom, heat, air, curiosity, smoke
• วิชา - ภาษาต่าง ๆ mathematics, physics, English, history
* ศัพท์ บางชนิดลงท้ายด้วย s แต่เป็ น Non – Count Nouns
เช่น news, mumps, measles, politics
(วิชามักลงด้วย ics )

* ใช้ “ a, an ” กับ Count Nouns ที่เป็ นเอกพจน์ ( = One ) เสมอ

He is a policeman.
She works at a bank.
There is a hospital on F street.
A man is driving a car.

* ใช้ “ an” คำเอกพจน์ ที่อ่านออกเสียง Vowel sound

This is an old car. An ant bit me.
There is 60 minutes in an hour.
An intelligent person learns fast.

Determiners are words that determine nouns.

They provide ‘rough’ quantitative qualifications.

>Some projects should be initiated to help the needy.

>A few attendees wanted to leave early.

>Other effects were the economy downturn and political

turmoil.

Many + Plural Count Noun

• Many alumni gathered at the old campus.
• Many statistical figures are displayed.
• Many humanitarian items were distributed.

Much + Non-Count Noun

• Much liquid is required in a radiator.
• Much consumption of carbohydrate causes sleepiness.
• Much knowledge helps widen one’s vision.

A few + Plural Count-Noun

• Success depends chiefly on a few factors.
• In 1776, a few Americans drafted a declaration.
• A few hours can be tiring on this boring drive.

A little + Non-Count Noun

• A little cinnamon is added into my coffee.
• Many residents have a little income.
• It was surprising to see a little development.

A number of + Plural Count-Noun

• A number of retirees continue to work.
• The Congress had a hearing on a number of bills.
• At the banquet, a number of celebrities were seen.

An amount of + Non-Count Noun

• An amount of liquefied gas was leaking.
• The scientist received an amount of cash.
• An amount of information triggered the protest.
