INDUSTRIAL

REVOLUTION
PART 1, 20 MARCH 2017
OBJECTIVES: STUDENTS
WILL
Define the industrial revolution.
Analyze how new inventions impacted the
United States.

JOURNAL:
What do you know about the industrial
revolution? List some things that still exist today
in the United States because of the industrial
revolution.
DEFINITION

Industrial Revolution = a period of rapid growth

in using machines for manufacture and
production that began in the mid-1700s
Technology = tools used to produce items or do
work
PRE-REVOLUTION

80% of people worked in agriculture

Most manufacturing [literally creating (fact) by
hand (manu)] was done in the home.
Families created products at home, sold the surplus
(extra) to traders
Cloth, thread, crops, clothing, shoes, etc

All machines were created by hand individually

TECHNOLOGY: HOW THE US
ACQUIRED IT
IN GREAT BRITAIN:
1769 water-powered weaving frame invented
in Great Britain (makes cloth)
Spinning Jenny mechanized spinning wheel
(makes thread)

CORPORATE ESPIONAGE!

and brings them to America

Opens his first textile mill in 1793
At his death in 1835, he owned 13 mills total
TECHNOLOGY: HOW THE US
ACQUIRED IT
1790s Conflict with France (Quasi-War / XYZ Affair)
NEED WEAPONS FOR WAR
Eli Whitney proposes that the government invest in
the mass production of guns using
INTERCHANGEABLE PARTS = identical machine parts
for easy assembly and replacement
Interchangeable parts become an industry standard
efficient mass production of identical goods
BUT!

Manufacturing grew slowly

Why?
Foreign goods were cheaper
Needed to grow food many farmers were still
subsistence farmers
WHAT CHANGED? POLITICS

War of 1812 Britain blockaded American ports

need for American manufacturing
Limited Liability people can invest money
without the responsibility of paying for business
losses = more money to create factories
Protective Tariffs the government created
several tariffs between 1816 and 1840 which
improved manufacturing profits
AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY

Late 1700s / Early 1800s

Iron plows and plows using interchangeable
parts made farming more efficient
Eli Whitneys Cotton Gin made it easier to
remove seeds from cotton for weaving and
spinning using interchangeable parts
AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY

Late 1830s
McCormick and John Deere begin manufacturing
steel plows and mechanical reapers

growing industry? What will the United States
need to do to support the growing industry?
