Before the Film

An old photograph
An image from the past
Offers information but also
Imaginative connection between
ourselves in the present and the past
time of the photo
Bridge between then and now which
makes the past present
This is presence
It is also a ghost
A photograph
Invites us to see things differently
Increases our perception
We become de-familiar with what we
think we know
we make images in order to enable
us to see things in the real world
more fully (Phillips, 66)

The Moving Image
The moving image is different in that
there are other images either side
which locate it within time, within a
before and after (Philips, 2012: 66)
When we pause a moving image, it
creates a moment out of time -

Two ways of looking


-at action and representation a
sequence
-at presence - a single image
The Two Poetics
Cinema, the predominantly modern art,
experiences more than any other art the conflict
of these two poetics, though it is, by the same
token, the art that most attempts to combine
them. Cinema is the combination of the gaze of
the artist who decides and the mechanical gaze
that records, of constructed images and chance
images.

I would describe as photogenic any aspect of things,


beings or souls whose moral character is enhanced by
filmic reproduction. (Epstein in Philips, 2012: 71)
The sublime continues
With the close-up space expands, with slow
motion, movement is extended. And just as
enlargement not merely clarifies what we see
indistinctly . . . but brings to light entirely new
structures of matter. . . This is where the camera
comes in with all its resources for swooping and
rising, disrupting and isolating, stretching or
compressing a sequence, enlarging or reducing
an object.

Time
A film does not need a time to be a film
Image is used in the service of time we look at
before and after images as interlocking pieces
leading to a films end. We use images to tell a
story.
