GUIDANCE
This template PowerPoint presentation includes all the
relevant elements you need to cover in your Music
Video Assignment 02
It is suggested you save this PP in a different name and
share it with your group so you always have a copy
some sections require you to delete the information on
the slide and replace with your own work
Add more pages to each section where necessary [you
should be doing this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary
This document will be added to as you progress
through the pre-production phase.
TASK 1 Idea Generation and
Research
RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or dont like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing
styles, techniques and conventions that we have
looked at in previous sessions. Explore how you could
interpret the song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant,
images, mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to
generate these
RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance,
etc and how this might link to your production
MUSIC VIDEO 1
J COLENO ROLE MODELZ
This music video is in collaboration with project
Yosemite. This means the the video has lots of very
cinematic shots of Yosemite national park. The video,
for this reason, has lots of beautiful B-roll shots of the
park and time lapse shots of clouds, stars and the
transition from day to night. The editing of the video is
very simple cutting on the beat and cuts between the
footage shot in Yosemite and of the performer doing
seemingly random things around the street. When it
comes to camerawork there is a noticeable difference
between the quality of the footage and the shots in the
Yosemite sections of the video whe compared to the
parts of the video which include J Cole himself. I think I
would like to include a time lapse shot of some kind in
my music video. From this video Ive seen that they
can create very cinematic looking shots if done right.
MUSIC VIDEO 2
ICE CUBE IT WAS A GOOD DAY

This music video has a lot of camera work which

involves many tracking shots following people from
behind as they walk. Also has some tracking shots but
of cars and from a different angle. I dont think Ill be
able to incorporate the shots which involve cars but
the other tracking shots are possible. The editing of the
video involves a lot of hip-hop genre conventions such
as slow transitions between shots. I may include some
of these transitions because they can look very good if
they fit the song.

CONVENTIONS
Conventions of music videos that I may include in my
video are things such as editing the video based on the
tempo of the song. This is very common in music
videos because it creates a clear link between the song
and the visuals. Another convention of music videos
are that the majority of them feature the artist of the
song performing the song. A convention of music
videos is linking the visuals of the video to the song
lyrics.
MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
I think I will base the visual style of my video on juxtaposition
due to the song title its self being a juxtaposition. This can
involve things such as contrasting colors; for example red
and green, black and white, blue and orange. I could use yin
and yang symbolism because it is a good example of
contrasting colors. I could use split screens to contrast the
colors and also too contrast different things going on in each
screen.

ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Day N Night/ Kid Cudi
Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi was born January 30,
1984, better known by his stage name Kid Cudi. He is
an American recording artist and actor from Cleveland,
Ohio.
Kid Cudi has links with other artist such as; Kanye
West, J Cole, Kendrick Lemar, Travis Scott and Drake.
Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a
music genre formed in the United States in the 1970s
which consists of a stylized rhythmic music that
commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and
rhyming speech that is chanted.

TASK 2 Pre-production
Assessment
GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make
your music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
GUIDANCE:
BUDGET TARGET
You have provisionally given an outline target of 2000
to make your music video
This target should include a 10% contingency [that
means your budget should allow for 200 pounds
within the budget so realistically you aim lower than
1800]
Your budget should account for everything, except your
own time and input
Consider more than one option to solve a requirement
you may be able to balance your budget later, there
will have to be a compromise somewhere
GUIDANCE:
TIME
You will need to plan a schedule for the pre-
production/production/post-production
Nominally you should work on 2 weeks pre-production,
1 week filming [2 college days Mon./Tues first week
after half term] and 2 weeks edit/post-production
Who is going to do what? How will you split the time?
When can you film? What is the availability of the
equipment/resources/locations/personnel?
What problems can you foresee? How will you
overcome them?
TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
Summary of intended production: I will be making a music video for the Kid Cudi
song Day N Nite.
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended outcome: I intend to
make a video which revolves around the theme of the song, or at least the title. So the
title of the song is Day N Nite so I'm going to base my video on things that
juxtaposition each other also intercut with b-roll shots I get. I would like to get a time
lapse shot which I can inter splice into the video.
Detailed breakdown of the music track chosen and your interpretation of it
[remember the questions in the workbook, e.g. pace/mood/tone/structure]:
The track I have chosen is a hip-hop song called Day N Nite. In the song the artist,
Kid Cudi, seems to be in a time of struggle at least psychologically. He seems to be
different at night then in the day. This inspired me to use things in my video of things
that are opposites but also complement each other. This may sound quite dark
because Ive described it as him struggling psychologically however the song does no
have that feel. The song is a fun and relatively up beat.
Specifically outline your intended technical/equipment requirements: I will
require a camera to film with and I will look at places in york for hiring the camera.
Include any details that you think [you could use material from your pitch]:

LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce:
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance,
access, cost, weather? How will you manage
this?
EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly from college, but who do
you need to speak to get this kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
I have found a camera hire company in york. This company is called hireacamera.com. The
camera that I have looked at hiring is a Canon EOS 5D MkIII. This camera form
hireacamera.com will cost me 64.00 per day. I believe I will be filming for two days so this
camera will cost me 128.00 over a two day period. The features of this camera include; 22.3
megapixel full-frame sensor, 61-point AF, 6 fps continuous shooting, ISO 10025,600
sensitivity, expandable to ISO 102,400, Full-HD video with manual control, 14-bit DIGIC 5+
processor, Weather sealing, 8.11cm (3.2-inch) 1,040,000-dot screen, HDR mode and A full-
frame DSLR capable of capturing 22-megapixel images at 6fps and Full-HD movies.
https://www.hireacamera.com/en-gb/products/HAC00-00403-canon-eos-5d-mkiii /
Another camera that I have looked at possible hiring over the previous camera mentioned, is a
Canon XA10 Camcorder. This camera comes with a free tripod that can be used for the time
you have hired the camera for. This camera will cost 80 for 5 days including the tripod. The
website which this camera is available on is vid4hire.com and this site allows you to select
your preferred delivery date and collection date. For every additional day you need to pay an
extra 16. For a 2 day hire the camera will cost me 68. You can also order the camera with
various accessories such as; upgraded full fluid tripod, upgraded the storage capacity, top mic,
LED top light and wireless microphones. I think If I were to hire this camera the accessories
that I would include would be the LED top light and perhaps the upgraded storage capacity.
These two additional items would costs 10 each so 20 additional in total.
FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any
other specialist facilities?
I will not need any specialist facilities to complete my
video all I will need will be a place and possible
someone to edit the video together.
PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? My team will consist of a camera operator and a director.
Some of the scenes in my video may need a performer. So I will have another person as
part of the crew incase of this possibility.
Who is in it? Me, Ben, Josh, and Will.
What are each team members strengths/weaknesses?
When are they available? The crew members of my video are available every time we
need to film.
CAST: Do you need any external performers? I do not think I will need any external
performers for my film because I do not intend on using many performers
When are they available? N/A
Cost implications? If I need to get any external performers I think that I will get amateur
performers because their role will not be a big one. However if they are needed then I will
be able to pay for their travel and their food for the day. This should be good enough
because being in the video is good for them due to the exposer they can possibly get.
Will you have to feed them? Yes.
Transport them? Yes.
Other personnel? I cannot think of any other
Is anyone else helping you? The members of my crew will be helping me.
PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
The plans that I have currently do not include in props
of costumes.

costs
Local equipment hire companies have costs for camera, lenses
and kit [tripod, dolly, steadicam rigs, etc]
Travel by vehicle can be nominally charged at 40p per mile so
you need to know how far you location is from where you are!
CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATIONS
Do you need clearance for copyrighted materials? [you will need to contact Mechanical
Copyright Protection Society-Performing Rights Society Alliance (MCPS-PRS)]: Depending
on how much of the copyrighted material I include will depend on if I will need Clarence for the
material. If I use a lot of the copyrighted material then I will need clearance to use it. If I just use
small clips or segments then I will not need clearance.
Do you have performers external to your group performing? They will need release
forms that declare you can use footage of them in the production. This needs to be
planned for: At this time I do think I will not be using performers outside of my group. However if
plans change and this requirement occurs then I will require the necessary forms which will allow be
to use the footage of them.
Do you have any actors under the age of 18? You will need parental permission forms: I
do not have any plans to use actors under the age of 18 in my video. If I use actors I will most likely
use actors overt the age of 18 so parental permission.
Are you filming on private property? You will need written consent PRIOR to filming.
Plan in advance. This needs to be considered: I will not be filming on private property. So I will
not have to require any permission to film. I will be filming in areas which are open to the public
only. However if I do use actors under the age of 18 I will most likely know them personally so
getting parental permission will be easy to acquire.
Consider where you may need specific risk assessments and health and safety
documentation: If we are filming outside in a public area then I assume that I will need to perform
a risk assessment document on the area where we will be filming. I will also need to consider health
and safety when it comes to picking a location (outside and in a public area). I will go on a recce to
check the shortlist of places I have in mine and if it is all the same across the board then the
deciding factor will be the health and safety.
FINANCE/PRODUCTION
COSTS
Using industry rates cards and researched costs of
equipment [cameras], cast, crew, props and facilities
[locations, edit rooms, etc] calculate the likely cost of your
production
Outline details of financial considerations of project, this
could be cost of props/costume/travel/food/etc
Explain what your overall budget is [if applicable] and how
this is to be met
How will you deal with any extra costs? Contingency fund?
What percentage of your budget should this be? [hint: add
10% on to the final cost, this should cover it!]
Do you foresee any problems? How will you manage
this/over come them?

TASK 3.1 Visual Planning
PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you pre-visualize the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualization and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
PRE-
VISUALIZATION/CONCEP
T BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the look & feel
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on color/lighting
Defining the mise-en-scene
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you to
approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that have
inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas
to each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of
the song, then add a slide for each section with
timings, lyrics, what happens and details on specific
shots

You could storyboard and shot list each section as you

go, to break up the process.

I would like each verse of this song to have visuals which
contrast each other in some way(s). However I would like to
increase the contrasting factors further into the song it gets.
What I mean by this is; for example, in the 1 st verse the
visuals I will use will only contrasting and oppose each other
in a singular way. Then in the 2nd verse the visuals will
contrast and oppose each other in more then one way. Then
in the 3rd verse the visuals I will use will contrast and oppose
each other in 3 ways. For this concept the visuals for the first

He's all alone, some things will never change (never change),

One idea that I have for the chorus sections of the song is to
film several shots of things (which I'm not sure of yet) at one
time of day then, reshoot the scenes the exact same but at a
different time of day (most likely day and night). Then I will
play the two side by side intercut with other b role shots.
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
I would like to include another element into my music video
to give it a deeper meaning. The thing I would like to
incorporate is to do with the Plutchik color wheel. This is a
color wheel which has emotions connected to the colors on
different levels. So for example; red, on the wheel, is
connected with rage, and the emotion of anger is a lighter
red. On a standard color wheel, it shows you which colors
constant by have contorting colors opposite to each other on
the wheel. The opposite color to red on color wheels is
green. The emotions which are connected to green is terror
and the emotion which are connected to the lighter green is
fear. You can see how the emotions which are connected to
these contrasting colors contrasting each other also. These
emotions are also related at the same time as they contrast
each other. Rage and Terror are connected even though they
are opposing one another. This is the same with all the
emotions on the wheel.
STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
The picture that is on the slide is a screen shot from the
original video from the song Day N Nite. as you can see it
is just a white silhouette on a black background. I think I
would like to include something like this. I may use the same
silhouette concept but with different contorting colors. The
other picture I have included is a screen shot from the
beginning of the film Superbad. The silhouette with the
different colors is kind of shots I would like to include, in
some form, in my music video.

INTRO (1 ST 14
SECONDS)
My plan for the first 17 seconds or so, which is an
instrumental intro, is to use a green screen and walk in
front of the screen. I will either film myself or a
performer walking/standing around for around 20
seconds. I will also gather day time footage and
nighttime footage to use throughout my video. I will use
it in the intro by making the green screen the nighttime
footage and then have a clipping mask on the
performers silhouette of the daytime footage. This will be
for a couple seconds. I will then change the background
and the silhouette to contrasting colors. (Red & Green,
Blue & Orange, Purple & Yellow). After going through this
sequence I will do the same as before but flip the colors
and footage of the silhouette and background. After this
instrumental section of the song is done, the title of the
song is said. When it is said text of the title will pop up
on screen with the background being daytime footage
VERSE 1 (15-40
SECONDS)
Once the Day and Nite text has appeared it cuts to a shot of a
glass of water, at the moment I am thinking of using a wine
glass. Behind the glass will be a split of contrasting colors,
down the middle of the glass. On the beat of the song the
contrasting colors in the background will change and alternate.
(I can also just film a couple seconds with different lighting and
cut them together instead of just using a green screen. This
may be needed because with the green screen the desired
effects on the water may not work.) Im hoping for it to create
cool effect on the water. This scene will be used from 15
seconds to 27 seconds.
From 27 seconds to 33 seconds I will show 3 seconds of a
peace scene, this will be just shots of a street or town. Then
the next 3 seconds I will contrast this by getting show footage
of a war torn area.
From 33 seconds to 40 seconds I would like to show a section
CHORUS 1 (40-1:10
SECONDS)
Shots of my/performer doing things in the day then
exact same at night. Cut them together. These can be
related to the lyrics and shown at the at time in the
chorus. For example when the song says loner show
large crowds/groups.
VERSE 2 (1:10-1:38
SECONDS)
From 1:10-1:15 I will include a drone shot. The shot will be the drone
going straight up and then coming back down. I will start will the drone
at its maximum height and on the beat cut to the parts of the shot
where the drone is lower. This is to make it feel as if it is falling down. It
goes with the part of the song which goes solo doe low so it sort of fits
the lyrics as well. From 1:15-1:18 I will use a shot of me walking down a
long stretch of path and cut me further down the path way on the beat.
Then from 1:18-1:23 a shot of my wall in my room, (which has a beach
covering the whole wall. This shot will From 1:23-1:29 I want to have
shots of old people and young people. So from 1:23-1:25 will be a close
up shot of an elderly relative I have, then from 1:25-1:29 a close shot a
baby, this will show a contrast of age. Also I want to include this because
from 1:25-1:29 in the song it goes A silent sleeper you won't hear a
peep, peep, showing a baby at this time also contrasts the lyrics
because babies do not usually sleep well. From 1:29-1:38 I will use a
shot of the performer from behind stood on the said of a suburban
street. This shot will last from 1:29-1:34. Then, from 1:34-1:38 it will cut
to the exact same shot but at night and with the light from a street lamp
above shinning done on the performer.
CHORUS 2 (1:38-2:05
SECONDS)
Shots of my/performer doing things in the day then
exact same at night. Cut them together. These can be
related to the lyrics and shown at the at time in the
chorus. For example when the song says loner show
large crowds/groups.
VERSE 3 (2:05-2:33
SECONDS)
From 2:05 to 2:10 I want to include a time lapse shot.
This is because in the song it say slow-mo, so having
a sped up time lapse type shot will be a good contrast
between the visuals and the lyrics. Either a time lapse
of the sky or of cars. From 2:10-2:15 I will have a
medium shot of the performer (me probably) look at
the camera with a red light shining on one side of the
face and a blue light shining on the other side. From
2:15-2:22 I will have a time lapse shot of a sunset.
From 2:22-2:28 I will show a clip of somebody putting
black adidas shoes on. From 2:28-2:33 I will have a
shot the performer (me probably) from behind looking
at my wall (the whole wall is covered in a picture of a
beach). I will then cut to a shot of the performer in the
exact same position however he wont be looking at the
wall but looking out into a field or into some natural

same at night. Cut them together. These can be related to
the lyrics and shown at the at time in the chorus. For
example when the song says loner show large
crowds/groups.
PLAN OF FILMING
Monday 20th March- Get camera tonight. Film couple seconds of b-roll. Car light through glass.
If I cant get this shot on Monday (because of training) then get it on Wednesday or Tuesday
night.
Tuesday 21th March- Half day, can get 1:23-1:25 shot, can get 1:18-1:23, get 30-60 seconds of
day time footage and get 30-60 seconds of night time footage.
Wednesday 22nd March-(May rain, if this is the case I can get the outdoor footage on the
Tuesday before or at the weekend.) Full day off so I can get the majority of filming done. Get a
time lapse shot of the sky. Record for about an hour maybe? Get shots of 1:28-1:33 verse 3. I can
find the royalty free footage I need from 0:27-0:33 of a war area and a peaceful area and 0:33-
0:40 of a cheetah. Get a shot of long stretch of path and walk down it. I will just film for the
amount of time it takes me to get to the end of the path. This shot is only 3 seconds shot it
should be more then enough. If it is raining on this day then I can try film some b-roll with the
Thursday 23rd March- Morning off, can get the Black Adidas shot at college. In the morning I
may be able to get some more b-roll shots of sky, trees, ect.
Friday 24th March- Half day, this day can be dedicated to getting the chorus footage. This
footage will be essentially the same shots in the day and at night. So this means I will need to go
to locations to get the day footage and return at night once the sun is down and replicate the
shots just at night
Saturday 25th March- On this day I may need to catch up gathering footage which I haven't got
by then, this is because on my day off (Wednesday) it is forecast to rain a lot and I'm planning on
doing a lot of the outdoor filming. So if this is not possible, due to the rain, then this will be the
day which I catch up. I can also get some sunset/sunrise shots. I will need to go to an area which
a sunrise/sunset is visible.
Monday 27th March- This can be the day that I get my first 17 seconds of green screen
footage. I can also get the 0:15-0:27 seconds which require a green screen and a glass of water.
So this will be the day which I use the studio.

PRODUCTION GROUP
INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
LOCATION
INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
LOCATIONS
RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Bb as a staring point
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing
document, you should evaluate if anything changes in
production and when you put control measures in
place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
RISK ASSESSMENT
CONTINGENCY
PLANNING
Things go wrong
Your contingency plan is there to give you a backup or
to minimise the effect on production
You should consider the following areas: Technical,
Location, Personnel and Organisational areas [about 5
potential issues for each]
Use the form in pre-production folder on Blackboard
CONTINGENCY PLAN
PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
Provide an outline of what you will do on which days
during production
You should broadly plan to the following structure:
- 2 weeks pre-production
- 1 week filming [plan for up to 2 days]
- 2 weeks editing [essentially 2 days for every day you
filmed]
SCHEDULE
CLEARANCE AND
