Definition
Matter crosses boundaries of the
system.

Control
Volume
General equation for energy
balance
Eo = (H+K+P)o mo
Acc = input - output
[(U + K + P)t2mt2 (U + K + P)t1mt1 ]sistem = (H+K+P)i mi -
(H+K+P)o mo + Q + W
Mass can cross system boundary
(flow).
Includes flow work of mass entering
system.
Kinetic and Potential energies usually
neglected.
In open system there are Steady state
system and unsteady state system.
For unsteady state system, the
accumulation term (E) in the energy
balance can be non zero because :
1. The mass in the system changes
2. The energy per unit mass in the system
changes
3. Both 1 and 2 occur.
In an open system, energy can enter and leave with
mass flowing in and out, in addition to the usual
energy transfer mechanisms of heat transfer and
work. Also, the energy stored inside the system can
change due to an increase or decrease of mass in
addition to changes due to changing state (for
example, an increase or decrease in temperature.) Of
course, overall energy is still conserved.
Example for USS system
SS System
Most processes in the refining and
chemical industry are open, ss
system. That continuous processes
are most cost effective in producing
high-volume products.
[(U + K + P)t2mt2 (U + K + P)t1mt1 ]sistem = (H+K+P)i mi -
(H+K+P)o mo + Q + W
(E)sistem = - [(H + K + P )m] + Q + W
Because E = 0
Q + W = (H + EP + EK )
