Core 2 Quad Processor Technology

The document discusses the Intel Core 2 Quad processor. It introduced the Core 2 Quad in 2006 as a quad-core processor using two dual-core dies in a single package with 8MB of shared L2 cache. It provided benefits like improved multi-tasking and system performance due to multiple processing cores. The Core 2 Quad used the Socket LGA775 and was compatible with chipsets from Intel, NVIDIA, VIA, and SiS. It represented an advancement over single-core processors by utilizing more cores for enhanced processing power.

Introduction of Core 2 Quad
The Core 2 Quad processor for desktop PCs,
designed to handle massive compute and
visualization workloads enabled by powerful
multi-core technology.
The latest four-core Core 2 Quad processors are
built on 45nm Core micro architecture enabling
faster, cooler, and quieter desktop PC and
workstation experiences.
Core 2 Quad Architecture
The Kentsfield released on November 2, 2006.
Kentsfield, the code name for the quad-core chip.
It uses 2 dies in a single package and each die is a
dual core unit, for a total of four cores on the
processor.
Each core still has 4 MB of shared L2 cache for a
total of 8 MB L2 on the processor.
Core 2 Quad Architecture(Cont..)
If 1 core wants to access data to another core on the
other die the communication occurs over the front-
side bus(FSB).
The FSB between the processor & chip still runs at
1066 MHz .
The FSB is used for accessing the RAM memory.
The communication between each pair of cores can
be done up to 8 GB/s.
Features And Benefits Of Core 2 Quad
Wide Dynamic Execution- Enabling delivery of more
instructions per clock cycle to improve execution time and
energy efficiency.
Smart Memory Access- Improving system performance
by optimizing the use of the available data bandwidth.
Advanced Digital Media Boost- Accelerating a broad
range of multimedia, encryption, scientific and financial
applications by significantly improving performance when
executing Streaming SIMD Extension (SSE/SSE2/SSE3)
instructions.
Virtualization Technology- Enabling greater security,
manageability, and utilization.
Features And Benefits Of Core 2
Quad (Cont..)
Intelligent Power Capability- Designed to deliver
more energy-efficient performance.
Larger Advanced Smart Cache- Optimized for multi-
core processors, providing a higher-performance, more
efficient cache subsystem.
HD Boost- Implementing new Streaming SIMD Extension
4 instructions for even greater multimedia performance and
faster high definition video editing and encoding.

Advantages Of Core 2 Quad
64 bit architecture- 64 bit architecture improves
performance by allowing systems to address more than 4
GB of both virtual & physical memory.
It provides support for:
64 bit flat virtual address space
64 bit pointers
64 bit wide general purpose registers
64 bit integer support
Up to 1 TB of platform address space
Until recently faster software came from faster processor.
Now performance will primarily come from multi-core
processor.
Advantages Of Core 2 Quad(Cont..)
Core 2 Quad = 4 processing cores
More cores enables your computer to multi-task i.e. do
more than one thing at a time.
It faster and more efficiently as you have more engines
spreading out the workload amongst themselves i.e. 4
cores.
It improving the system performance , games ,
multimedia and others works.
Compatibility of Core 2 Quad
Conroe, Conroe XE and Allendale all use Socket LGA775
Supporting chipsets are:
Intel: 865PE/G/GV/G, 945P/PL/G/GZ/GC, 965P/G, 975X,
P/G/Q965, Q963, 946GZ/PL, P3x, G3x, Q3x, X38, X48, P4x ,
5400 Express.
NVIDIA: nForce4 Ultra/SLI X16 for Intel, nForce 570/590
SLI for Intel, nForce 650i Ultra/650i SLI/680i LT SLI/680i
SLI and nForce 750i SLI/780i SLI/790i SLI/790i Ultra SLI.
VIA: P4M800, P4M800PRO, P4M890, P4M900, PT880
Pro/Ultra, PT890.
SiS: 662, 671, 671fx, 672, 672fx.
ATI: Radeon Xpress 200 and CrossFire Xpress 3200 for Intel.
Conclusion
The Core 2 Quad processor built using the latest
production process, this newcomer has a number of
indisputable advantages: high clock speed, increase bus
frequency, SSE4. One instruction support and a few
other micro-architectural improvements.
The Core 2 Quad processor is one of the best processor
because its affordable price and best performance.
Although Core i7 was realeased on November,2008.
