BASICS

Piston is an cylindrical plunge which fits into the bore of the cylinder
It slides across the length of the bore with in the cylinder which is called stroke length
The space between the piston and cylinder assembly is called piston clearance
The piston head should be rigid to withstand the hot gas pressure
The piston should dispense complete heat to the walls of the cylinder
Another main important function of the piston is to act as a bearing for the axial pull
exerted by the connecting rod

PISTON

The piston of the IC Engines and steam engines is to take the impulse
from the gases and gives motion to the crank through the connecting
rod
Along with the work transmission even the dispersion of the gases to
the walls of the cylinder is one of its main function
The shape of the piston used in IC engines is trunk-type piston, for
which one end is open and consists of (i) head or crown, (ii) Skirt which
acts as a bearing for the axial pull of the connecting rod, (iii) Piston Pin
and (iv) piston rings to seal the combusted gases
