Summary of Chapters 17-20 from Oliver Twist By: Joshua

Chapter 17 Summary
Mr. Brownlow makes an ad saying that he will give money (five
guineas) to whoever knows where Oliver is

Mr. Bumble sees the ad and rushes to Mr. Brownlow's house and tells
him that Oliver is a terrible child and displays Nothing but
treachery, ingratitude, and malice.

Mr. Bumble also told Mr. Brownlow how Oliver attacked Noah Claypole
(which is not true because Noah made fun of Olivers dead mom)

Mr. Brownlow decides that Oliver was not the person he first thought
he was. He tries to convince Mrs. Bedwin by saying, We have just
heard a full account of him from his birth; and he has been a
thorough-paced little villain all his life.
Chapter 18 Summary
Fagin locks Oliver away in his dirty house and forces him into solitary
confinement

Dodger and Charley try to convince OT to be happy like they are with
their life with Fagin

They say that they are living a happy life with lots of money

Fagin gives more and more time to Oliver to spend with the other
boys

Fagin hopes that if he keeps Oliver in solitary confinement for longer,


OT will want to spend time with other boys in the gang and be a
part of his dishonest group and follow all of Fagin's orders
Chapter 19 Summary
Fagin needs Olivers help to rob a house because Oliver is very small
and the right size for the job

Sikes tells OT that if he hesitates or backs out on robbing the house


he will kill Oliver with his gun

Sikes tells Nancy to deliver OT to the target house and he also warns
her not to delay getting Oliver to the job even though Nancy doesn't
want Oliver to be a criminal
Chapter 20 Summary
Oliver waits at Fagin's house as they wait to be taken to Sikes house
where he will stay the night and rob the target house

Fagin gives Oliver a horror book about criminals and murderers

Nancy takes Oliver away to the Sikes house

Oliver is scared and wants to call for help on the streets but Nancy
tells him that they could be killed by Fagin

Sikes shows Oliver and Nancy a gun and tells them that he can kill
them both with it if they cause any trouble. He merely paused to
show him with a menacing gesture that he had that same pistol in a
side pocket in his great coat.
