Editing Case Study

By Rory Forde
Cutting to the beat
This is a technique where the visual
clips cut on the beat running through
the song. This links the pace of the
video to the tempo of the song. An
example of this is the song Wings by
Little Mix which cuts 5 times to the
beat within the first 3 seconds of the
music video
Visual Effects
Visual effects are effects added to the
video post filming. This is usually
found in the form of adding effects
over a clip filmed in front of a green
screen. An example of this is from The
Weekends music video called Cant
feel my face where the artist sets on
fire, this is done post filming.
Lip Synching
Lip synching is a technique where
someone is filmed mouthing the words
to a song where the audio has been
pre-recorded. This is used in a lot of
music videos as moving around while
singing would effect the sound they
produce. This is useful for live
performances to cover deficiencies in
live singing.
Multi-Image
When two images are displayed in a
clip at the same time. The technique is
used to show multiple things occurring
at once during the music video. This is
common in videos made by groups
where there is more than one singer.
An example would be Pentatonix on
their song called Daft Punk
Chroma Key
This is the process of filming in front of
a green screen and then adding a
picture or video over the block colour
of the green screen. This is useful if
there is an abstract theme that the
music video revolves around. An
example of this would be if the music
video is set in space, the space effect
could be added in after filming in front
of the green screen.
