ABOUT THE CITY

Newcastle upon Tyne (usually called just a short


Newcastle) is a city in the metropolitan district
Tyne and Wear, in the northeast of England. The
city is situated on the banks of the River Tyne, has
been historically part of the county (English
county) Northumberland. According to estimates
it has about 273.600 inhabitants.
ABOUT THE CITY

Newcastle is located in the northeast of England,


near the mouth of the River Tyne.Located in the
England rich ores coal and is a city known for its
mining industry since the Middle Ages.This part
of England - rich ores, commonly called Black
English.The relief around the city is
lowland.Newcastle is the nearby town of
Gateshead, which is located opposite the river
connected the conurbation (system-related cities).

An important year for the city was in 1530, when


the city received a monopoly on trade in coal and
its transport on the river Tyne.This gave a strong
impetus to economic development of the city.Year
1636 was unfortunate for the city, because a third
of the population died of the plague.During the

Originally a Roman settlement Pons Aelius, built


in the 2nd century, the Romans built a fort near
the bridge over the River Tyne near Hadrian's
wall (wall protected the Roman province of
Britain from the invading barbarians from the
north).After the fall of the Roman Empire -
Newcastle became part of the Anglo-Saxon
kingdom of Northumbria, and was then called
Monkchester.The city was destroyed in the
conflict with the Danes.1080 by Robert Curthose,
son of William the Conqueror restored.The city
has since been called the Novum Castellum or
New Castle.He is a significant strategic position
and the northernmost English fortress near the
CITY LANDMARKS.

Notable are the remains of city walls from the 13th century and
the cathedral.Nicholas from the 14th century, there are 7
bridges across the river from which the best known modern
Tyne Bridge and Gateshead Millennium Bridge was built in
2000.The city has a neoclassical city center, which in the 19th
century, built by Richard Grainger and John Dobson.The
historic center is called Grainger Town and has many neo-
classical buildings that recall the ancient pattern.The city has
many parks, the most important Leazes Park and St James Park
(it's famous football stadium).Along the river's promenade
Quayside.The city has many galleries, theaters and concert
halls.
AIRPORT

Newcastle International Airport is located


approximately 6 miles (9.7km) from the city centre on
the northern outskirts of the city near Pontelandand is
the larger of the two main airports serving the North
East. It is connected to the city via the Metro Light Rail
system and a journey into Newcastle city centre takes
approximately 20 minutes. The airport handles over five
million passengers per year, and is the tenth largest,
and the fastest growing regional airport in the
UK,expecting to reach 10 million passengers by 2016,
and 15million by 2030.As of 2007, over 90 destinations
are available worldwide.

Newcastle United is an English football club based in


Newcastle upon Tyne.The club plays in the Premier League,
after the success of the eighth club in England.

The club was founded in 1892 after the merger of two local
clubs, Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End.Since
there are home games played at St James & # 39;Park,
which receives 52,387 spectators.So far they have been
champions of England four times, but the biggest success of
the club is considered conquering Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in
1969.Protective club colors are black and white.Supporters
club called Toon Army.Their biggest rival Sunderland with
whom play Tyne-Wear derby since 1898.
