Hushan in Liaoning and Jiayuguan
Pass in Gansu. The wall in Beijing
measures over 550 km (342 miles)
long
 The Great Wall of China was built over
2,000 years ago, by Qin Shi Huangdi, the
first emperor of China during the Qin
(Ch'in) Dynasty (221 B.C - 206 B.C.).
 The Chinese were already familiar with the
techniques of wall-building by the time of
the Spring and Autumn period between the
8 and 5 centuries BC. During this time and
the st Warring States period, the states of
Qin, Wei, Zhao, Qi, Yan and Zhongshan all
defend their own borders. Built to withstand
the attack of small arms such as swords and
spears, these walls were made mostly by
stamping earth and gravel between board
frames.
