Thames takes rise near Kemble, a village in the south-
west of England. The weird part of searching the exact place where it takes rise in on a map is that you wont find any mountains. The exact place is a hill. The first name of the river was the celtic Tamesa which meant the dark one because of the dark colour of the soil under the water. The history of Thames Because it drains in the North Sea, it helped the english solidiers and all the Londons naval fleet to navigate till the sea in WW I and WW II. Till WW II the english people developed power plants along the river. So in the WW II the Germans bombed all those power plants. Because of this, although it is the cleanest river which flows into a major city, it is biologicaly dead. The River Thames can first be identified as a discrete drainage line as early as 58 million years ago. Geographical informations Its lenght is 346 km, the second longest river in United Kingdom. Its average debit is 65.8 m3/s. The entire surface of the river is 12,935 km. Thames ends with a big estuary. Pollution of Thames Over 50% of Londons, Readings and Oxfords sewage drains in Thames. Because of this, the river doesnt have a pleasant smell and a nice colour in some of the places along it. Mercury (Hg) is an environmentally persistent heavy metal which at high concentrations can be toxic to marine life and humans. Sixty sediment cores of Hg 1 m in depth spans in the entire River Thames. Best ways of admiring Thames If you are fearless of high altitudes, you can admire Thames from Londons Eye. If you prefer lower heights, you can walk along one of the many bridges in London like Tower Bridge, London Bridge or Westminster Bridge.
