PATIENT CONTROLLED

ANALGESIA
(PCA )
DEFINITION
A method of pain control that gives
patients the power to control their pain.
An intravenous drip is set up and the
patient has a small control unit with a
button which, when pressed, inserts a
small dose of a drug such as morphine,
into the infusion fluid.
Overdosage cannot occur.
COMMON INDICATION
Post-operative pain
Severe acute pain
Chronic pain
Cancer pain
Patients unable to take oral medications
CONTRAINDICATION

Those who are confused or have


learning difficulties
Those with poor manual
dexterity
The very young (< 5 years)
The critically ill
RESPONSIBILITY AFTER USING
PCA PUMP
Clean and tidy
example : clear the tubing and clean the blood of
sprinkling at the machine.
Make a return in the correct place (OT).
Checked all the damage and notify to the staff
nurse incharge .
Example : any damage will be borne by staff.
Donot remove pca machine and key from drip
stand
