one in 12,000 to 15,000 people suffer (considered rare)
PWS is found in people of both sexes and in all races worldwide.
HOW IS IT CHARACTERIZED???
low muscle tone
short stature (when not treated with growth hormone),
incomplete sexual development
cognitive disabilities
Obesity (BIGGEST FACTOR)
Behavioral problems
No self control especially around food
Described as a drug addict trying to get he/she next high
Nightmare for parents
BUT WHY IS THIS HAPPENING!!
Genetic mutation
Head trauma
GENETIC MUTATION
Prader-Willi syndrome is caused by changes in the 15th chromosome
Normally contributed by the father
Most cases are missing the 15th chromosome
This mutation is genetically passed down by a parent (Parent will not be effected)
Flaw in the hypothalamus part of their brain, which normally registers feelings
of hunger and satiety.
HEAD TRAUMA

Trauma can occur in the brain causing one to not get the proper signals to indicate
one is full and satisfied
Cancer can also be a factor

CAN THIS BE TREATED?
There is no cure
Treatment includes:
Non-stop supervision
Strict portion control
hormone treatment (if detected early)
