ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO What genre of music is the video for? 5 Seconds of Summer are said to have a mainly pop-punk and pop-rock feel to them. The genre of pop-rock can be seen in the video with their take on a pop ballad with an electric guitar in the instrumentation to give it more a rock vibe. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO Who is the target audience? How do you know? The band have mainly a younger fan base, with many of their fans being teenagers between 14-19, with some being older, showing a diverse range of people. Many of the fans are also female, as the appearance of the male band members creates an appeal for them. In terms of psychographic grouping, I would say that many of their fans are aspirers as they are mainly young people. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO What storylines/themes does it include? How do they reflect the target audience? For this video, 5 Seconds of Summer decided to reach out to their audience in order to create the theme of their video. They asked for stories and they picked the ones that they found the most interesting to be part of the video, which meant that the audience could get involved with the making of the video which means that it easily reflects their audience. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Camera work: Many of the shots in the Jet Black Heart are medium close ups of the band members or the characters that they had picked to be in the video. This allowed the audience to feel the intimacy between the song and what it meant to a lot of people, which the emotions on their faces in the video can also show. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Mise En Scene: Many of the scenes in this video are the actor in the middle of a backdrop. I could correlate this with the band not wanting the scenes and the mise en scene distracting from the message that is in the song, which therefore means that the shots would have minimum distraction for the audience. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Lighting: Much of the lighting used throughout the Jet Black Heart video is low-key. This helps to distinguish the way in which the song creates a melancholy feel. With the song being a pop-rock ballad, the video reflects this with this low-key lighting, as if accentuating it. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Sound: As stated before, the genre of this song is based around a pop-rock and pop-punk genre. However, this song is also quite a rock ballad, which means that the instrumentation of the piece is heavily reliant on instruments such as an electric guitar, which is prominent throughout the entire song and in some instances we can see certain band members playing said instrument. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Editing: The shots are edited in a way that shows the disjointedness of some of the people featured in the video. The pace of the editing is quite fast, showing different perspectives, the length of the shots is also quite quick, allowing the audience to see different points of view to the world. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Stylistic Features: This video uses performance alongside narrative to tell the moral of the song. The use of the band members and members of their audience means that this video means more to the members of their fan base as it feels more applicable and intimate for them. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Representation of artists/social groups/ themes/ issues/ places: The video to Jet Black Heart has allowed the band to be seen in a different light, it has allowed critics to see how they include their fans. The fact that they included fans with specific hard-hitting backstories means that the video overall shows how the video is based around the fans. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How does the music video entice the viewer? The music video to this song entices the audience by showing different perspectives to life, through the eyes of their audience. The close ups of the actors and band members create the sense of compassion, which would draw the viewer in. CONCLUSION OF THIS VIDEO Overall, this is similar to the video I would like to produce as it shows a mixture of harsh backstory and performance of the song. This could inspire my video because it could help me to show some of the intimate parts of the video if any are to arise. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO What genre of music is the video for? According to many sources, Olly Murs has associations with the pop rock and contemporary R&B genres, however, the song Army Of Two would come under the pop genre due to its beat and the conventions that it shows. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO Who is the target audience? How do you know? Olly has a very wide range of fans, from all races, ages and genders and as a result it is very hard to categorise the target audience for this song. However, quite a lot of his fans are in their late teens and early 20s, also many of his fans are older, as himself, Olly is in his 30s and many fans are the same age, meaning that there is no specific target audience. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO What storylines/themes does it include? How do they reflect the target audience? This video is about the relationship that Olly has between him and his fans, who, as he says mean the world to him He says that he wrote the song to thank his Murs Army for everything that they have enabled him to do since his discovery on The X Factor UK. He adds that it was written in a way of him speaking to his fans to grow with him and keep going. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Camera Work: Through quite a lot of the video, mid shots are used, as if to show the audience the sincerity that Olly spoke about in the meaning of the song. It is also interesting to note that there are multiple clones of Olly throughout the video and at various points of the video, we are shown pans to different clones but we always return to the original. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Mise-en-scene: This video is completely set in a car park, with multiple clones aforementioned in the previous slide. The use of being in a CGI created empty car park background and the multiple clones of Olly suggest the simplicity of the relationship that Murs is trying to portray through the song. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Lighting: The light throughout the video is artificial, even though the whole video is based around a CGI effect. The lighting is also bright, this could be suggested to be the fact that the relationship between Olly and his fans is still bright. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Sound: Within the song itself, the sound of horse hooves trotting is used, this is prominent as within the title the word Army is used and the sound of hooves can be correlated to this. The music video does not add any more sounds than what are on the original song found on the album. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Editing: This video follows Olly as he walks through an empty car park, many of the shots are longer, making it look more natural and a more convincing thank you to his fans. The pace is slow and looks natural, as if a testament to the naturalistic relationship that Olly and his fans have. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Stylistic Features: As this video and song is used as a thank you for his fans, it is based around him being honest and earnest to the camera. The song is called Army Of Two as he affectionately calls his fans the Murs Army which would mean that the song is more applicable to his fans. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How are technical codes used? Representation of artists/social groups/ themes/ issues/ places: This video helped to show how Olly regards his fans. It represents Olly as the kind of artist that pays respect to his fans and will hold them in high regard no matter what. It also represents his fans as his Army which they call themselves. ANALYSIS OF THE VIDEO How does the music video entice the viewer? The music video entices the video by continuously showing mid shots of Olly himself. This would entice the audience as many of the audience would be a fan of Olly, meaning that it would be more enticing for their fans to watch. Even if the person watching isnt really a fan of the artist, I think it would entice them by the way that there are many effects and techniques that are interesting to see. CONCLUSION OF THIS VIDEO Overall, I believe that this video is similar to the video that I would like to make as it is based around the concept of the relationship between the video and the lyrics, which I think is effective. I believe that this could inspire me into making a video where the video is based around a certain concept or idea.
