Definition: Disability rates are the proportion of the population with a disability, for whom disability status is
known, out of the civilian non-institutionalized population aged 5 and over. This indicator breaks down
disability rates by racial group, and by sex.
Notes: The Census reports that disabilities may be over-reported in the 2000 Census for the overall
disability rate, for employment disabilities, and for "go-outside-home" disabilities. Sensory, physical, mental,
and self-care disability rates are unaffected, and rates for children (age 5-15) are unaffected.
