It runs perpendicular to the sea
and deposits into a lowered A place that is lost in the horizon
basin between sky and sea.

THE SALK INSTITUTE

La Jolla, California, completed in 1965, was to be a campus composed of
three
Main clusters: meeting and conference areas, living quarters, and
laboratories. Only the laboratory
cluster, consisting of two parallel blocks enclosing a water garden, was
actually built.
The two laboratory blocks frame an exquisite view of the Pacific Ocean,
accentuated by a thin linear fountain that seems to reach for the horizon
In August 1963, Kahn received a telegram from the Pakistani
department of public works.

The project was designed in two phases. The first phase included the
National Assembly Building, a prayer hall, and dormitories. With the
expectation that eight hundred more acres would be acquired, the
complete master plan included courtrooms, a hospital, a museum,
schools, and low- and high-income residential areas. This lesson
examines Kahns process of designing a ceremonial building that was
to serve as a political and spiritual symbol for a community.

Exterior Prayer Hall The structures were built by hand, with workers
carrying concrete on their heads up and down
bamboo scaffolding, and they were not completed
for twenty-three years.
Kahn and his team also considered the placement
of the structures within the cardinal (directional)
points. Eventually they decided to shift the Prayer
Hall east, to face toward Mecca, a city in Saudi
Arabia considered to be the spiritual centre of
Islam because it is the birthplace of the Prophet

The Process of Design

Form precedes Design. Form is what. Design is how. . . .

Design gives the elements their shape, taking them from their
existence in the mind to their tangible presence. . . . In
Architecture, it characterizes a harmony of spaces good for a
certain activity.

PHILOSOPHY OF WORK

Architecture? The Power of Drawing,

The Process of Design, Form and Function,
LIK The Spirituality of Matter, and Designs for
Urban Life.

The only way you can build, the only way you can get the
building into being, is through the measurable. You must follow
the laws of nature and use quantities of brick, methods of
construction and engineering. But in the end, when the building
becomes part of living, it evokes immeasurable qualities and the
spirit of its existence takes over.

Architecture is the thoughtful making of spaces. It

is the creating of spaces that evoke a feeling of
appropriate use.
