WHAT IS ORBITAL
CELLULITIS?
It is the acute purulent inflammation of cellular
tissue of the orbit behind orbital septum
It is serious condition of the eye which can
endanger the vision of the eye as well as life.
ETIOLOGY
It can affect any age or sex.
Mostly it occurs unilateral.
The common etiologies for orbital cellulitis are
1. Extension of the infection of the neighbouring tissue
like paranasal sinus, teeth, face, lips, etc
2. Penetrating injury of the eye with or without retention
of foreign body.(exogenous)
3. Following septic operations like evisceration,
enucleation, dacryocystography
4. Metastasis from septicaemia, abscess (endogenous)
Commonly involved organisms are

Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus


aureus,

Streptococcus pyogenes, Hemophilus


influenzae
