What is ZigBee?
 ZigBee is a home-area network designed
specifically to replace the proliferation of
individual remote controls
 ZigBee technology takes full advantage
of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and
extends the capabilities of this new radio
standard by defining a flexible and
secure network layer that supports a
variety of architectures to provide highly
reliable wireless communication.
IEEE 802.15.4
 The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is a simple
packet data protocol for lightweight
wireless networks.
 The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is designed to
provide reliable data transmission of
modest amounts of data up to 100
meters or more while consuming very
little power.
Features of IEEE 802.15.4

 A 64-bit address space.

 source and destination addressing.

 Error detection,and advanced power

management.
Why we need to go for ZigBee
 Low data rate
 Low power consumption

 Small packet devices

 Cost-effective

 security, and reliability

What Does ZigBee Do?
 Designed for wireless controls and
sensors
 Operates in Personal Area Networks
(PAN’s) and device-to-device
networks
 Connectivity between small packet
devices
 Control of lights, switches,
thermostats, appliances, etc.
How ZigBee Works
 Topology

– Star
– Cluster Tree
– Mesh
 Network coordinator, routers, end
devices
Topologys
star topology
 In a star topology, one of the FFD
-type devices assumes the role of
network coordinator and is
responsible for initiating and
maintaining the devices on the
network.
 All other devices, known as end
devices, directly communicate with
the coordinator.
Mesh topology
 Ina mesh topology, the ZigBee
coordinator is responsible for starting
the network and for choosing key
network parameters, but the network
may be extended through the use of
ZigBee routers
Device Types
 ZigBee coordinator( ZC)

 ZigBee Router (ZR)

 ZigBee End Device (ZED)

ZigBee coordinator( ZC)
 There is exactly one ZigBee coordinator in
each network.
 the coordinator forms the root of the
network tree and might bridge to other
networks.
 It is able to store information about the
network,including acting as the repository
for security keys.
ZigBee Router (ZR)

 Routers can act as an intermediate

router, passing data from other
devices.
ZigBee End Device (ZED)
 Contains just enough functionality to
talk to its parent node (either the
coordinator or a router)
 It requires the least amount of
memory, and therefore can be less
expensive to manufacture than a ZR
or ZC.
ZigBee Frequencies
 Operates in Unlicensed Bands
 ISM 2.4 GHz Global Band at 250kbps

 868 MHz European Band at 20kbps

 915 MHz North American Band at

40kbps
ZigBee and the Market
