Organised under the theme: Teacher education
and development in Africa-The need for access,
equity, sustainability, quality and relevance
within the context of globalisation.
The major objectives were to:
(i) contribute to the debate on teacher education
in Africa
(ii) Build capacity for the delivery of teacher
education programmes in Africa
The objectives represented ways in which
DETA could support various protocols on
education and training in Africa and the
Millennium Development goals
Started with a Pre-conference OER workshop
and the African Deans of Education Forum
(ADEF) meeting on Monday
Most delegates checked in on Tuesday, with
various addresses from guest speakers
Speakers focused on:
(i) The role of collaboration and partnership in
teacher education
(ii) Standards and quality assurance in teacher
education and development in Africa
(iii) Models/practices and experiences in the use of
distance education for teacher education
(iv) Equipping African teachers to develop their
learners as critical citizens in a digital world
The use of open educational resources coming
in as latest technology in teacher education
TESSA providing such OER
Need to establish a conceptual analysis of the
challenges facing teacher educators and
improve their conditions of service
Look at a range of significant issues that could
contribute to the reformulation and reform of
teacher policies
The need for collaboration and partnerships in
ODL, Teacher education, research etc
Renewed vigour in the drive towards ICT
integration in teacher education institutes
The need to convert Teacher education
institutions to colleges of education that award
degrees
