Decile (Math) Statistics

This document discusses deciles, which divide a distribution into ten equal parts. It provides examples of calculating the 7th decile of an ungrouped data set by arranging the scores in order and using a formula. For grouped data, it gives the formula for finding a decile which involves the lower boundary of the class, total frequency, and cumulative frequency. An example calculates the 3rd and 6th deciles of a grouped data set using this formula.

Decile is the 9th score
point divides a
distribution to ten
equal parts.
Decile for
Ungrouped data-
is the data you first
gather from an
experiment or study.
Example
Find the 7th decile or D7 of
the following test scores of a random sample of
10 students.

Given :

36,43,41,29,16,24,34,21,19,29
Solution: First arrange the
scores in ascending order.
16,19,21, 24,29, 29,34,36, 41

Formula :
K - end term
D= (n+1) n- number of data
10
10 - constant value for
decile
SOLUTION :
7 = ?
7
7 = ( 10 + 1 )
10
7
= ( 11 )
10
77
= = 7.7 = 8
10
D7 is the 8th element
Therefore ,D7 = 36
Decile for grouped data-
are those values of the
distribution that divided
total frequency to then
groups.
Formula :

fDK

LB = lower boundary of the Dk class

N = total frequency
Cfb = cumulative frequency before
I = size of class interval
K = decile where n = 1,2,3...
Example : Calculate the 6th and 3rd
deciles of, the following grouped data.
Class interval Frequency (f) Lower <Cf

121-130 12 120.5 95
