SCOPE
To design the sewers for collection of waste
water and an effective treatment plant for the
disposal of treated water into the nearby running
water course.
ASSUMPTIONS
The assumed lots in the gated community is about 100
consisting of total population of about 500 considering the
future expansion.

The sewer designed is combined i.e., sewage and storm flow.

The water supply rate is about 200 lpcd and of that 80% is
taken as sewage and the total sewage flow is calculated to be
80,000 lpd.

The ground slope is assumed in the South-West direction and

the flow of sewage is conveyed by means of gravity.

DESIGN
The design of sewers is based on the IS code:1172-1993 which
includes the following parameters
Self-cleaning velocity
Diameter Of sewer
Slope of sewer

For sewers whose diameter is less than 750mm attain maximum

discharge when flowing half-full.

The peak factor for the maximum discharge recommended as

per code is 3.5
The discharge in the sewer is estimated by summing up the
sanitary and storm water sewage. It is multiplied with peak
factor and the total maximum discharge is obtained.

From the continuity equation,

Q= A.V
=> A= Q/V
Where, A= Area of c/s.= /4 d2,
Q= Flow of sewage,
V= Velocity of flow.

The self-cleaning velocity for the sewer pipe diameter less

than 350mm is given as 1m/sec specified by IS: 1172-1993.
Hence area can be determined and then diameter.
The slope of the sewer can be derived from mannings formula,

2 1
1
v R3 S 2
n

Where,
v= velocity of flow,
n= mannings constant (0.013)
R= Hydraulic mean depth (d/4 for flowing half-full)
S= ground slope
By considering the effects of gases that are liberated from the
sewage and obstruction of solids in the sewer, the minimum
diameter of the sewer is given as 150 mm. Hence the diameter of
the house sewer is taken as 150 mm as specified to the IS
code:1172. The slope of the sewer to be provided to attain the
self-cleaning velocity is given by 1 in 75.

The sub-branch sewer should have a minimum self-cleaning

velocity of 1 m/sec and the sewage flow in this sewer is found to
be 0.02373 m3/sec. The diameter of the sewer is found to be
173.86 mm and proposed diameter is 200mm. From the
mannings formula the slope of the sewer provided should be 1 in
110.
The branch sewer is the major line that carries all the discharge
from sub-branch sewers. The maximum discharge obtained in
this sewer is 0.11265 m3/sec and the self-cleaning velocity is
0.75 m/sec and the diameter obtained is 489 mm and the
proposed diameter is 500mm. The gradient provided is
