History
According to Pausanias & Anaximenes was
"the first who practised the art of speaking
extemporaneously."
Was designed as an event to not be a
memorized, rehearsed speech, but rather, a short,
analytical speech spoken off the cuff,
emphasizing critical thinking in addition to
performance.
Speaking Situations
When you are a candidate for a post in a student
government and you deliver your campaign speech before a
voting public.
When you are assigned to report a topic in a class.
Advantages
Train students to orate in public and to
sway the audience with their opinions,
emotions and speaking styles.
Build a public name and reputation.
Develop a smoother, more polished affect
when they are communicating with each
other.
Boost your self-confidence.
Disadvantages
Time Pressure
It is not scripted
It is like an Impromptu but you have given small
time to practise.
May not have adequate time to plan, organize
and rehearse.
