FIRST ORDER RELIABILITY

METHOD
WHY?

1.It is difficult to find this integral when problem is

multidimensional.
2.FORM is one of the algorithm to approximate
probability of failure.
Why?

JOINT PDF shows that the contours are

irregular (dissimilar mean and SD)
and the limit state function can be non
linear also,
In such cases the volume/probability of
failure calculation will become difficult
task
What is FORM?
The name of First Order Reliability Method (FORM)
comes from the fact that theperformance function
g(X) is approximated by the first order Taylor
expansion.
This includes mainly two steps:
1.transforming irregular contours to symmetric
contours which makes integration simple.
2.Approximate the boundary g(x)
First Step:
The simplification is achieved through transforming the random
variables from their original random space into a standard
normal space.
X-space transformed to U-space.
The transformation from X to U is based on the condition that
the cdf s of the random variables remain the same before and
after the transformation. This type of transformation is called
Rosenblatt transformation .
standard normal variable has a mean of 0 and a standard
deviation of 1.0.
