Welding Metallurgy 1
(FTB22203)
Question 1
O In one welding experiment, 50 mm-thick
stainless steel plates were joined using
SMAW. The current and voltage were 350A
and 22V, respectively. The heat lost to the
water-cooled copper shoes and by radiation
from the surface of the slag pool were 1050
and 150 cal.s-1, respectively. Calculate the
heat source efficiency.
Question 2
O Find the best welding speed to be used to
welding 25 mm thick steel plate with
welding parameter as below;
E = 25V I = 250A
Efficiency = 0.8 Room Temp = 28C
Possible welding speed is 5-10 mm/s, limit
cooling rate is 40C/s at temperature
500C
Question 3
For a single complete joint penetration weld
pass is made on steel using the following
conditions:
E = 24 V C = 0.0044 J/mm3 C
I = 120 A h = 12 mm
U = 3 mm/s = 0.80
To = 25C Tm = 1510C
a) Calculate the peak temperature (Tp) at
2.0 mm.
b) If recrystallization temperature is
723C. Determine the width of HAZ.
c) Find the influence on the width of HAZ
if preheating sample is used. Assume
preheating temperature is 150C.
Question 4
In multipass welding do you expect a
higher or lower cooling rate in the first
pass than in the subsequent passes?
Why?
Question 5
A cold-rolled AISI 1010 low-carbon steel sheet 0.6
mm thick was tested for surface reflectivity in CO2
laser beam welding under the following different
surface conditions:
(a) as received;
(b) oxidized in air furnace at 1000C for 20 s;
(c) oxidized in air furnace at 1000C for 40 s;
(d) covered with steel powder.
In which order does the reflectivity rank in these
surface conditions and why?
