PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

limbic system: seat for emotions

Autonomic nervous system is activated by the centers

Parasympathetic:
Sympathetic:
Also called the Known as
craniosacral Thoracolumbar
system (all its neurons
(preganglionic are in lateral
neurons are in horn of gray
matter from T1-
the brain stem L2)
or sacral levels
of the spinal
cord)
Cranial nerves
III,VII, IX and X
(most of the
parasympatheti
c nerve fibers
are in vagus
nerve)
In lateral horn of
gray matter
from S2-S4
SYMPATHETIC PREGANGLIONIC
NEURONS
Preganglionic axons exit spinal cord through ventral
root and enter spinal nerve
Exit spinal nerve via communicating ramus
Enter sympathetic trunk/chain
SYMPATHETIC PREGANGLIONIC NEURONS

1. Preganglionic axons exit spinal cord through ventral root and enter spinal nerve
2. Exit spinal nerve via communicating ramus
3. Enter sympathetic trunk/chain
Preganglionic fibers are myelinated
Preganglionic fibers communicate with postganglionic fibers
inside the ganglion (autonomic ganglion) which present very
close outside the spinal cord
Vertebral column have ganglia (sympathetic ganglion) and
when each level is connected it will form sympathetic
trunk/chain
Each of the spinal cord fibers are coming out & enter the
ganglion.
Sympathetic ganglion where synapse between the
preganglionic & postganglionic occur
Postganglionic fiber is unmyelinated so it will go to grey
ramus
Preganglionic fiber will go to white ramus due to myelin is
white color
Communication occurs preganglionic
fibers & postganglionic fibers
(sympathetic trunk) Paravetebral ganglion- synapse
between pre & postganglion fibers in sympathetic
ganglion occurs in adjacent at spinal cord
Prevetebral ganglion- preganglion & postganglion
not in sympathetic but away which is at in front of
the spinal cord
