WHAT ARE EATING

DISORDERS?
Eating disorders are extreme
manifestations of a variety of concerns
about weight and food experienced by
women and men. These include anorexia
nervosa, bulimia nervosa and compulsive
eating. All of these are serious emotional
problems that can have deadly
consequences.
What causes eating disorders

The causes can be biological, psychological and

social, although it seems that in these types of
disorders the most determining factors are social
and cultural factors.

The cultural imposition of being thin and having

"perfect measures" results in direct diet, which is
usually the first step towards anorexia and bulimia.
How are eating disorders treated

Treatment plans are usually designed according to

individual needs and may consist of one or more of the
following treatments:

Psychotherapy
Control and medical attention
Nutritional advice
Medicines

Some patients may require hospitalization to treat the problems

caused by malnutrition or to make sure they eat enough if they
are very light. Complete recovery is possible
How can I prevent eating disorders

A good dietary education from childhood helps prevent the onset of

eating disorders. In addition, detecting them and treating them
early improves their prognosis a lot.

Early detection and being put in the hands of specialists to follow an

adequate treatment are the best weapons to combat eating
disorders. However, it is better to prevent their appearance in the
family, educational and social fields.
