Interval Estimation
Problem 01
Suppose, total marks for a course of 35 randomly selected students is
normally distributed with mean 78 and SD 9.

a. Find 90%, 95% and 99% confidence intervals for population mean .
Make a summary based on findings.

b. Discuss what happens to the width of the confidence interval as the

confidence level is increased.
Problem 02
Data were collected for a sample of 49 customers to estimate the mean
amount sent per customer for dinner.. Assume a population standard
deviation of $5.

a. At 95% confidence, what is the margin of error?

b. If the sample mean is $24.80, what is the 95% confidence interval for
the population mean?
Problem 03
Suppose we have given sample heights of 20 students, where, =
67.3", SD = 3.6" and the distribution is symmetric. Develop 95%
confidence interval for and make a summary based on your findings.
Problem 04
The variance in drug weights is critical in the pharmaceutical industry.
For a specific drug, with weights measured in grams, a sample of 18
units provided a sample variance of 2 =0.36.

a. Construct a 90% confidence interval estimate of the population

variance for the weight of this drug.

b. Construct a 90% confidence interval estimate of the population

standard deviation.
Problem 05

A statistician chooses 27 randomly selected dates and when examining

the occupancy records of a particular motel for those dates, finds a
standard deviation of 5.86 rooms rented. If the number of rooms
rented is normally distributed, find the 95% confidence interval for the
population standard deviation of the number of rooms rented.
