BACKGROUND
& OBJECTIVE
BACKGROUND

Moringa oleifera leaves that contain high levels

protein (25.1-25.3%) and all essential amino
acids, vitamins and minerals in high
concentrations
Sulfur as a cofactor in the synthesis of rumen
microbial protein
Both M. oleifera leaves and sulfur is expected to
improve rumen microbial activity
OBJECTIVES

An in vitro study was conducted to asses the

activity of cellulases, protease and amylase
enzymes from beef cattle rumen fluid
supplemented with M. oleifera and sulfur
Priorities in Ruminant
Nutrition in this
Research

Proper combination of:

o Supplement M. oleifera leaves as a source
of nitrogen
o Supplement sulfur as an important mineral
in microbial activity

MATERIAL & METHOD
MATERIAL

Fresh rumen fluid from male beef cattle

Dried M. oleifera leaves and then mashed
Sulfur
Basal feed (Elephant grass and concentrate)
METHOD
The experiment used a CRD of 3 x 2 variables
including three concentrations M. oleifera leaves
(0, 10 and 20%) and two levels of sulfur (0 and
0.4%), with four replicates per treatment

The six treatments were

1.Basal feed (P1)
2.P1 + 0% M. oleifera + 0.4% sulfur (P2)
3.P1 + 10% M. oleifera + 0.0% sulfur (P3)
4. P1 + 10% M. oleifera + 0.4% sulfur (P4)
5.P1 + 20% M. oleifera + 0.0% sulfur (P5)
6.P1 + 20% M. oleifera + 0.4% sulfur (P6)

CONCLUSION

The results of this study conclude that

supplementation of cattle feed with 20%
Moringa oleifera leaves and 0.4% sulfur
resulted in highest measured activities
of cellulases and amylase
