Characterization of short story

Definition
Characterization is the process by
which the writer reveals the personality
of a character.
Two ways to know the characterization
Characterization is revealed through direct
characterization and indirect characterization.
1. Direct or explicit characterization
This kind of characterization takes a direct approach towards
building the character. It uses another character, narrator or
the protagonist himself to tell the readers or audience about
the subject.

2. Indirect or implicit characterization
The audience has to deduce for themselves the characteristics
of the character by observing his/her thought process,
behavior, speech, way of talking, appearance, and way of
communication with other characters and also by discerning
the response of other characters.
There are five different methods of
indirect characterization:
Speech
What does the character say? How does the character speak?
Thoughts
What is revealed through the characters private thoughts and feelings
Effect on others toward the character.
What is revealed through the characters effect on other people? How do
other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
Actions
What does the character do? How does the character behave?
Looks
What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
The Sample
Bill was short and fat, his bald spot was widening every
passing year.
The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and
did not disobey their mother.
Janie didnt go in where Mrs Washburn was. She didnt say
anything to match up with Nannys gladness either. She just
fell on a chair with her hips and sat there.
