The document discusses the pioneers who settled the Great Plains under the Homestead Act, which gave settlers 160 acres of land if they lived on and farmed the land for 5 years, though life was difficult with harsh weather, grasshopper plagues, and homes made of sod that provided little protection from the elements. It also introduces the terms "sodbuster" to refer to farmers who cut sod to plant crops, and "Exoduster" to describe African Americans who migrated to the Plains after the Civil War.
