Pioneers on the Plains
A pioneer was a settler who moves from one place to
another.
Homestead Act as the law that gave pioneers 160 acres of
land to live on and farm on for 5 years
Homesteaders were people who claimed land under the
Homestead Act

Requirements

Man over 21 years old


Women who is the head of the family
Had to pay a fee of $10
Farm and live on the land for 5 years
Life on the Plains
There were grasshopper invasions which destroyed the
crops.
Bitter cold winter with deadly blizzards, blazing hot
summers with a little rain & that messed up the crops.
Tornadoes, hail storms and flooding
In the fall they had dry grass & fires.
Soddies
The homes were made of sod which is a piece of dirt the
grass that grows on it.
It was warm in the winter & cool in the summer
The homes were fireproof.
Bug and mice and snakes also might have lived inside.
Rain fell through the roof.
Sodbuster & Exoduster
Sodbuster- A farmer who cuts through sod before planting
crops

Exoduster- African Americans who moved to the Great Plains


after the Civil War
