Motivation is a force that

energizes and directs


behaviour toward a goal.
(Eggen, Kauchak, 1994).
Types of Motivation
EXtrinsic Motivation
oMotivation to engage in an
activity as a means to an end.

E.g. To accomplish an external


goal.
INtrinsic Motivation
Motivation to be involve in an
activity for its own sake.

E.g. because of a passion for the


activity
Motivation to Learn
o Students tendencies to find
academic activities meaningful and
worthwhile and to try to get the
learning benefits from them.

Behaviourist Theories

o Focus on changes in behaviour that


results from experiences with the
environment.

o Examine peoples expectations and


beliefs and their attempts to understand
how the world works.
Socio-Cultural Theories

o Emphasizes individual participation


in communities that value and support
learning.
Humanistic Theories

o Emphasizes peoples attempt to fulfil


their total potential as human beings.
