A Brief History of South Africa

When the 1994 elections were held, a new South Africa was born. Nelson Mandela, the
South African black leader who was jailed for 27 years because of the ideal of ending
apartheid, won the election. Three centuries of whites' sovereignty over the black mass of
the population finally came to an end.
This new beginning for the country called the "Rainbow Nation" - or, as Archbishop
Desmond Tutu says, the first South African black archbishop, Rainbow Children of God -
meant for the first time that all the people of South Africa , regardless of color, creed, or
sex, were the same. In 1997, an unprecedented constitution granted the people these
rights.
The 300 years of South African history that preceded this dramatic turnaround towards
freedom and democracy explain how everything went so wrong over such a long period
of time. White European settlers from three countries fought each other for the right to
control a vast territory that, in the opinion of each, belonged to them. At the same time,
black tribes did the same. And the settlers still fought battles with the tribes that cross their
path. It was at this time that gold and diamond mines were discovered. The blacks went to
work in the mines while whites got richer.
So that the story does not seem confused, it is necessary to talk about the social and
political role of South Africa in the Ancient History of the world.
On January 22, 1879, a Zulu army of 20,000 men attacked British troops in the
Transvaal region of southern Africa. It was England's biggest defeat in Africa.

After such a victorious period, the disciplined warrior lost the admiration of his
own people. The death of Nandi, his mother, turned the Zulu idol into an insane
killer.

Shaka determined the death of all women and anyone accused of not
expressing regret over her mother's death. With murders within the own tribe, a
Zulu group in disagreement with the atrocities of Shaka met and killed the
leader. Shaka was struck with the deadly bolts (sticks with iron at the tip). This
was the tragic end of the warrior responsible for creating the Zulu nation.
