What is Bill of Rights?

Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments to the US Constitution. United States from
establishment until today still believe that the primary purpose of government is
responsible for providing protection to the rights of the people.
History
James Madison believe that a bill of rights is
important. Madison introduced 17
amendments at the first meeting of the
Congress in 1789. The lawmakers accept 12
amendments in september. On October 2,
President George Washington sent a copy of
the amendments to each of the states. Three-
quarters of the states have ratified ten
amendments on December 15, 1791. The ten
amendments are known to Americans as the
Bill of Rights
Root
The roots that form the Bill of Rights is the British
tradition that is also characterized with unique
experience of the United States. Bill of Rights in
the Constitution of the United States has a root
that is closely linked to English. Three English
charters of liberty has an important role in the
development of British and American rights
under the law are the 1215 Magna Carta, the
1628 Petition of Right, and the 1689 Bill of Rights.

Purpose and Effect
The initial purpose of the Bill of Rights according
to Madison is to limit the power of government,
thereby prevent abuse of the legislative and
executive, and above all to prevent violations
of rule by a body of people, operating by the
majority against the minority. Until now, Bill of
Rights play a role in individual freedom. Many
of the rights of Americans affirmed such as the
right to privacy, freedom of speech and
religion, the rights of criminal defendants, and
the rights of racial minorities, all based on the
Bill of Rights.
