MAGNETO RHEOLOGICAL FINISHING
PROCESS

MAGNETO RHEOLOGICAL FLUID

DESIGN OF EXPERIMENTAL SETUP
Work piece rotates in clock wise direction.
Container rotates in anticlockwise direction.
Application of magnetic field activates CI particles.
Presence of abrasive particles in the fluid rub the work piece
surface, hence finishing process is carried out.

EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OBTAINED FROM
THE MRF EXPERIMENTS
WORK PIECE BEFORE AND AFTER THE
EXPERIMENT
(I) CYLINDRICAL

(II) FLAT
MERITS OF MRF
Capable of modifying roughness without altering form
Capable to accessing hard to reach areas
Roughness values from 100um-1nm
Able to attain wide range of surface characteristics by careful selection of
magnetic particles and abrasive particles

DEMERITS OF MRF
Can be difficult to scale up to mass production operation
Not as applicable to some ordinary finishing tasks where conventional
techniques can be used
Flat surfaces are most effectively finished than cylindrical
surfaces
