Family planning (FP)may be needed to achieve
1. Postponement of the first pregnancy after
2. Birth spacing
3. Birth control when the couple is having the desired
number of children to avoid hazards of high parity.
4. Prevention of pregnancy when medically indicated
e.g:
-General diseases such as heart disease, renal disease,
hypertension, diabetes ,tuberculosis, thyrotoxicosis,
malignancy, psychological and mental diseases and blood
dyscariasis.
-Obstetric indications such as recurrent toxemia, habitual
abortion, recurrent C.S etc ...
-Previous operations for prolapse, stress incontinence,
myomectomy, vesical and rectal fistulae etc...
-Diseases transmissible to the fetus such as syphilis, epilepsy,
deafmutism etc...
Family planning achieved by:
1. Providing contraception to properly space
pregnancies
2. Limiting the number of pregnancies and
deliveries to a safe number to avoid the
hazards of high parity ( mother and
child.(
3. Avoiding pregnancies in the extremes of
reproductive life ( danger to both mother
and child)
Advantages of practicing family planning:
A (For the mother:
1. Maintain a good health standard and better
health protection against certain diseases
(e.g, HBV,HIV/AIDS(
2. Protection against other health conditions
such as anemia or heavy bleeding/cramping
3. Avoid high parity hazards
4. Prevent the hazards of induced abortion that
is done because of unwanted pregnancies.
5. Better enjoyment of marital life .
Advantages of practicing F.P (cont.)
B ( For the children:
1. Diminished SB, neonatal and infant mortality as well as
congenital malformations.
2. Better welfare reflected as better nutrition, health and
education.
C) For the husband :reasonable financial responsibility
and better care for his children.
D ( For the whole family-:
1. Better living standards and housing conditions .
2. Facilities for recreation.
E ( For the whole nation :a slower rate of population
increase to allow for increased per capita income,
improvement of services and achievement of economic
and social developments
